Once again, the best way to back-channel...

Hi all, obviously the majority of communications on this group forum

are appropriate and the intention is for the entire NYCCAT community

to read them, HOWEVER I personally don't feel comfortable receiving

other people's private communications, and from previous discussions

about back-channel communications I get the feeling that other people

don't either. THEREFORE...

1) To send a PRIVATE message to a group member DO NOT press reply on

whatever email-client (AOL, YAHOO, GMAIL, etc) you are using. The

e-mail is not coming directly from that group member even though it

looks that way, the message is coming through yahoo-groups and

designed to show the group member's name on your e-mail BUT the return

address will automatically route the reply to the entire group. That's

just the way groups work.

2) INSTEAD, the BEST way to send a private, BACK-CHANNEL message to

another group member is to find the HEADING of the e-mail that

contains the To: and From: information. If you use G-mail like I do,

you might have to click where it says " show details " near the top of

the message or this information will not be apparent. I don't know if

AOL and YAHOO are similar so you will have to check.

3) Once you have the heading of the e-mail you must CUT & PASTE the

e-mail address into a NEW MESSAGE. For example, on this e-mail my

header information should say: The

e-mail address between the <> is ALWAYS the one you would use to send

a private message. In order to do this you must know how to open up a

new message and paste the e-mail address onto the correct field. Once

that is complete the rest is easy.

YES, this really is the best way to make sure your private

communications are not made public, and even though it may seem like a

bunch of work it's really pretty simple.
