Books and Action.

Hi,

Someone asked about which book about ACT was the one I found most

helpful. I just wanted to say that I am a self help book collector.

I have too many. I tend to read too much and sometimes don't take

enough action. I found this article in O Magazine very helpful and it

covers this very thing. I think it is very important.

As far as the books I found helpful. I haven't gotten through all of

them. I bought GOOYMAITYL first and have gotten through most of it.

It has been so helpful. The diffussion and willingness helps

enormously with my anxiety. Of course, when I found this list it

clicked so much. I would not have gotten anywhere near this far

without the list. It has helped me understand the book so much more.

I like both the other books but have not gotten completely through

them. Sometimes I just find an exercise to do in them and that is

helpful and I am still working through them. For me it is not an

either or. I wanted to read all three.

I have had anxiety for 20 years and I have found that sometimes we

just over think it. I contacted my previous therapist that helped me

with my anxiety before this last therapist. The way we aleviated my

anxiety was very simple. He just supported me over and over and

assured me I was fine and could go out no matter what. That simple

approach (you are what you think) worked. We didn't get that far into

what caused it, just how to solve it. Contrast that with incompetent

therapist that went over every inch of my past. I was way worse.

Now, when we have all these labels. Bipolar, PTSD, this disorder and

that disorder, I think we get into the diagnoses way too much and

that contributes to our over thinking. So, no matter what book we get

we need to make sure to mix it with action too. And sometimes we need

to go back to basics. I very much tend to get too caught up in the

books and reading and knowing, rather than action. I can know all

kinds of things but that isn't going to help me with my agoraphobia if

I never go anywhere.

Just my humble experience.

Robyn
