I've recently joined a company that is a rehab agency, and the therapist

previous to me did not share the rules/ regulations that are required prior

to her leaving. I'm having trouble getting the information from my employer

or from Florida Medicare. I know the basics, such as cleaning and documenting

monthly hydrocollator cleaning and monitoring temperature, etc., but I'm sure

there are things I am not aware of.

Any suggestions where I can find the information?????

Dear :

I am surprised that the WRITTEN policies and procedures are not on the

premises.

Any surveyor asks to see these so he/she can compare actual compliance with

Medicare and state regulations (if the latter is applicable).

How is the clinic able to review P & P annually (required) if they are not

physically present?

Pursue this with your employer first.

Another resource is the APTA. You can access information in a number of

ways. 1st, the website has information in the areas of reimbursement,

practice, and government affairs. The website is www.apta.org. You can also

contact any of these departments and request information. I contacted the

department of government affairs when I was looking for information regarding

Medicare guidelines for CORFS and they were happy to send me a copy of the

regs. Lastly, there are new products available from APTA called the

Reimbursement Toolkit and the Reimbursement Resource Manual. They contain

information that is current and applies to most settings. They are available

at APTA at 1(800) 999-APTA or through the website. They are discounted for

members.

I hope this provides you with good information to add to the other

recommendations you have received. Good luck! We recently opened a CORF and

I have been investigating the regs myself. I would be happy to anwer any

specific questions you may have.

Your agency should also have copies of the Health Insurance Manuals for

Outpatient Rehabilitation Agency which would have been issued by HCFA at the

time of certification. Updates to these manuals are sent occasionally by the

Fiscal Intermediary. Also, your agency should be keeping copies of any

Program Memoranda that are issued by the Intermediary with any changes in

regulations or interpretations of regulations. I also wholeheartedly endorse

the previous suggestion to contact the National Association of Rehabilitation

Agencies at . There are extensive regulations regarding coverage

and physical plant requirements of which you must be informed to maintain

compliance. Equipment upkeep is only a minor portion of the necessary

procedures.
