Guest guest
Hi everybody Since I started with the main problems of Chiari and SM I have more weight gained than ever, although I have been chuby all my life. There were just like 10 years in which I was not fat, and this was because I have high prolactin levels, so they gave me medicine to control them. At that time they thought it was because I have little tumors, named microadenomas, but it was not true. The real problem was Chiari, intracranial pressure was pressuring my pituitary gland and then I had high prolactin level. After the TCS surgery they came back to normal, but now I have noticed that I have intracranial pessure peaks, and when this happens I have high prolactin levels again. Another issue that I have told my doctor since the begining was that I am all day hungry, and that if I do not eat I feel defintively worst, all my Chiari and SM symptoms worsen with out food. At the begininig my doctor thought it was hypoglicemia, so he make me check it with lab tests, but it was not, as my all the studies related are find, then I started to observe that I need to eat more often than the rest of the people, and it is not sugar or food with sugar, as I have tried to eat a sweet but this not make me any better or make me improve my symtpoms, I then noticed that what really helps me is to eat proteins, when I eat proteins I really feel better. I took me many years to understand that I have a special need for proteins, that I have this protein need. This means that I have breakfast and then 2 hours later I am starving again, so it is impossible for me to stay on a diet as I need to eat quite often. But the issue here is that I do not feel well by eating fruits, vegetables, or sweets, what I need is proteins. I really feel better and all my symptoms really improve when I eat proteins!! I told this to my doctor, and he found out an article thay says that there is a relationship between SM and proteíns, that proteins disminishes in the CSF pressure and when this happens the SM does not gets worst. So according to this article SM has a relationship with lack of proteins in the CSF. My doctor says this could not be true completely as this would mean that SM would be more common in poor countries than in the northern countries, so this is not true, but that there is a relationship between proteins, oncotic CSF pressure and protein consumption. This will explain my desesperate need for eating, not any food, but eating proteins. Has any body with Chiari and SM in a desperate need for proteins? Mex. I decided to call my surgeon's office and ask them about hormone/ weight gain issues. The nurse told me that if she could give me an answer, she'd be the most popular person on earth right now! She said I was about the 5th person to call in the last week or two with the exact same symptoms. She also said that all of their female patients have struggled with this issue after surgery. They don't know what the cause is and therefore don't know how to treat it. She suggested getting some good blood work done to check thyroid and hormone levels. If nothing comes up there, to go see a good gyn for further testing. If nothing shows up wrong, she referred to it as an " unknown monster " somehow caused by the chiari or the surgery.... Guest guest
This is so strange!! I have been a very poor eater, most people love food but I eat because my body is hungry, not because it tastes good. Once I begin to fill up, the food starts tasting not so good so I eat very little. You would think this would make me a tiny person but just the opposite. It has caused me a tremendous weight gain. My hubby would always say my body was holding on to whatever I put in because I was not eating enough. I was eating child size portions and only 1 meal a day. A year ago, I was at my highest weight of 225 following my 2 surgeries. This was very worrisome to me, knowing my lack of movement was adding to my weight gain. But something changed for me and one day, I looked in the mirror and saw I had lost ALOT of weight and had not even noticed. I lost my mom a year ago so I was very distracted in my life. We didn't have a scale so I went out and bought one and sure enough, I was down 50 lbs!! Crazy, then because I can now weigh myself, I lost another 10 lbs. I have noticed that my need for food has changed alot. when I am hungry, I crave proteins so badly. In the last year, though my mission has not been to diet to lose weight, I decided that because I have had a major decline in my health due to chiari, the one thing I can do and control is to become a healthier individual and take better care of myself with eating better. I still don't love food but I try to snack through out the day. My protein cravings are satisfied by a handful of almonds and strangely, I have noticed that this does help me with fatigue. I get a feeling that I just must rest my body, my eyes can't stay open any longer. Generally, I just give up and take a nap. But now, taking a portion of almonds, that extreme fatigue feeling dissipate. So this is very interesting to me. I always believed that the pressure was causing me to get so tired I couldn't go on so if proteins can help, proteins will surely be continued!! On one last note, dropping 60 lbs so quickly makes me wonder why, so just to be on the safe side, I am going to schedule a complete work up but my hopes are, chiari does do crazy things to our bodies so hopefully this is one of them Take care
