Casey,

Do you think the flu shots have helped in the prevention of flu?

Hi,

has had a flu shot for as long as I can remember.

The first year of life we were able to get him into a trial for a drug to

prevent RSV. I don't know if it ever was approved. After the first year we

then started the flu shots.

As someone who gets his own flu shot let me weigh in here. Flu shots

are put together based on the best guess the disease control center has

about what flu strains are going to go around the world that year. Last

year they goofed, and the flu shots were generally not effective against

the major strain. My experience is that that was atypical. Most years

they get it right.

:

had a flu shot this year and last year (2 half-shots last year

actually) and she had no side effects. Everyone in our house including our

nursing staff gets them, plus grandparents.

We ALWAYS get flu shots for the entire family since Destiny was born. My

husband has been getting them since he joined the military (they're required)

and I've been doing the same since Destiny's first winter (except when I was

pregnant w/ Zachary). We have encountered some resistance, not w/ Destiny's

shot, but Zachary. He's a healthy kid and, before we explain about Destiny,

the Dr is reluctant to write the note. We are adamant about the entire family

since we are all in close contact w/ Destiny and if she was to get REALLY sick

it could be serious. Once the Dr realizes that he will write the note. BTW, I

had to skip my shot this year because I've developed a serious allergy to

eggs--my tongue swells on contact--and I know the virus is incubated in eggs.

I'm worried about Destiny, who was inoculated a few weeks ago, if I come down

w/ the flu. I hope she is still safe. All the Drs agreed that it was safer for

me to avoid the shots since developing this allergy. No one wants to see me

have a severe reaction and land in the ER.

  • 1 month later...

I've just recently had time to catch up on all the mail. And I normally

don't write. However.....

Elaine, my son is just about Jack's age (10 days younger) and when

you talk about his resistance to putting anything in his mouth it reminds me

so much of Nick. Up to 9 months old he wouldn't put a thing into his mouth,

he even sprouted two teeth without chewing on a thing. What made the

difference was his heart surgery. We don't know why... neither did his

docs...but a week after being home he put a rattle into his mouth. Then two

months latter he had his airway opened up with a procedure called a " cricoid

split " . After that everything went into his mouth. Now when he's playing he

uses his mouth as a third hand.

Also about the flu shot. Nicky received his this year and became really

sick. For 5 weeks he had spiking fevers, was lathargic(sp?) and barely moved

he also stopped eating. He lost a pound in 5 days. It was very frightening.

His doctor did some blood tests and thought his liver was malfunctioning. So

more blood tests but the findings were so odd they couldn't determine the

cause. Then all of a sudden he started to recover on his own. His doc

couldn't figure it out except to speculate that he was having a reaction to

the flu shot. Basically his body ran the three viruses at the same time. It

was truly awful.

Nicky's fine now and back to his charming self. Still little (15 lbs) but

we're working on that.

Happy new year all.

Hi Anita,

Thanks for your reply. It's really interesting about starting to put

things in his mouth after he had the heart surgery. Jack still won't put

anything in his mouth but I'm certainly not giving up hope. I'm confident that

he will do it one of these days!!!

Jack was also ill a few days after his flu jab and lost a lot of weight. I

had just put it down to being another virus but now I'm not so sure. He is due

to have his second jab now but I'm really wary about him having it. Would it

do any harm if he didn't have the second jab?
