Guest guest
Barbara, I've seen lots of informaiton about ozone on your site and want to throw in my two cents. Before I began spending 100% of my time fighting an insurance company and educating the public about toxic molds, I wrote about ozone for government publications (USDA) and did a number of freelance pieces for the major media about it. Specifically, my interest in ozone was confined to its GRAS (generally accepted as safe) status issued by the FDA and ozone's use as a food decontaminant (it kills e.coli, etc... better than does chlorine). After the USA Weekend article and 48-Hours piece, I was bombarded with ozone salesmen -- primarily from Alpine. Having been a fan of ozone, I decided to listen to the sales pitch. After reading the information provided and listening to the claims being made, I decided to consult a friend (former client) of mine who runs the only publicly-traded ozone company and who has spent tens of millions of dollars researching applications for ozone. Having spoken with him, I can safely say that I believe ozone's use to be confined to food safety and related applications. It will not kill stachy. What it DOES do, however, is leave behind a more oxygen-rich environment in which the spores can multiply faster and become stronger and more resistant to anti-fungal treatments. In sum, I do not endorse the use of ozone to " purify " indoor air. In fact, there is mounting evidence that ozone can exacerbate asthma and other respiratory problems, even in mild doses. Ozone has its uses: it has been used for years to purify nearly all of the bottle water on the market and can kill certain microbes in seconds flat. But, it's not a viable solution to toxic mold. Thanks. Melinda Ballard
