I just read somewhere -- I wish I could remember where -- that there

is a bird flu vaccine being produced right now. But I believe there

is a problem with being able to produce *enough* in time.

Donna,

I think my local paper said something about that too.

I can't recall the details, but I believe that the vaccines

are only experimental at this time while the antiviral

medication used in treating it is in very short supply.

Another problem is a mutated strain could become

non-resistant to antiviral drugs.

Not sure about the time line on bird flu vaccine development - but according

to our local Doctor there are two scenarios for mass infection in humans -

one is that it jumps species and then develops the ability to jump from

human to human - in which case there is no protection until the vaccine is

developed, tested and released. The other scenario and one that is being

studied very closely here is that the bird flu, once in a human subject

interacts with other human flu viruses and creates a new strain. In this

case it is possible that there is enough genetic material from the human

strains in the new virus that will cause a protective immune response in a

subject who has had flu vaccination.

I ran this by Dr Goldberg last week who responded that he is recommending

flu shots for us and our kids - obviously with consideration to each childs

own immune health.

There have been zero reported cases of avian flu being transmitted

from human to human. All known cases of " bird flu " over the last

thirty years have been tranmitted from infected poultry directly to

humans who have contact with that infected poultry. This is not to

say another scenario would not be possible just that it is unlikely.

H5N1 first emerged in Hong Kong in 1997, then later re-emerged in Korea,

Taiwan at the end of 2003, and China and Vietnam in early 2004. This year it

has spread to Indonesia and also through Russia. Yesterday, a bird-flu

strain (yet to be confirmed as H5N1) was confirmed in domestic fowl in

Turkey and Romania - officially putting it in Europe. It spread very slowly

between 1997 and 2003 and has accelerated since - suggesting change.

65 Humans have died so far since late 2003, 44 in Vietnam, 12 in Thailand, 5

in Indonesia and four in Cambodia. In many of these areas, it is the close

proximity of human living to raising domestic fowls and the practice of

selling live birds for slaughter in markets (must eat the freshest - and a

practice that continues despite refrigeration) that allows bird to human

transmission.

Quoting from today's " Straits Times " an internationally released article

says " The virus does not pass from person to person, but experts warn that

it can mutate to a form that becomes a human flu virus, passing easily

between people and triggering a pandemic. "

On the vaccine issue, in a second article it says " there is now no specific

vaccine against the H5N1 virus, and even if one is developed, it would take

years to produce, and distribute enough to effectively combat a pandemic in

humans. "

stresses the importance of a strong immune systems and way to strengthen
