Guest guest Posted March 26, 2000 Report Share Posted March 26, 2000 EXAMINATION ANNOUNCEMENT Communications Operator II City of Xenia, Ohio APPLICATION PERIOD BEGINS: March/April 2000 The City of Xenia is accepting applications to establish an eligibility list for the position of Communications Operator II. All vacancies (full-time, part-time, temporary) will be filled from this list. Applicants must first pass a Xenia City Civil Service Commission examination to be further considered for employment. DEFINITION: Under direction, receives messages, assesses need and dispatches appropriate personnel and/or equipment via written, oral or electronic communications systems; and do related work as required. TYPICAL TASKS (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY): Receives police, fire and emergency medical services (EMS) calls. Transmits and coordinates responses in accordance with safety division operating procedures and diverse community needs. Uses standard operating procedures in transmitting to and receiving radio and electronic data processing communications from vehicles in the field and law enforcement agencies. Maintains record of radio dispatches, keeps records and performs file search as needed. Monitors burglar and fire alarms/CCTV Security Equipment. Receives complaints and/or requests for information, maintains records; maintains communications with field personnel and keeps supervisors informed of unusual or emergency situations. Handles walk-in requests and complaints and makes appropriate referrals. Receives and handles bond receipts for Municipal Court. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: This position is the primary functioning member of the communications center. The operator is expected to perform all the assigned duties, equipment and operations with proficiency. EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS: Eighteen (18) years of age at time of appointment; High School graduate or equivalent; Knowledge of general office and clerical procedures; Clear concise articulation; Ability to follow written and oral instructions; Ability to develop and maintain effective interpersonal relationships; Ability to comprehend and operate electronic communications equipment; Experience operating communication and electronic computer equipment preferred; Required to train and be certified by State of Ohio (LEADS), within six (6) months of appointment and maintain current certification; Show proof of computer keyboarding skills; Ability to effectively listen and communicate via telephone medium or in person and make appropriate decisions/referrals based on information received; Ability to handle multiple tasks in a crisis situation. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Possession of written and oral communications skills to use phone, radio, write reports and to speak to citizens; Must have acceptable hearing and eyesight (including color vision) to operate communications and data processing equipment; Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time; Possession of manual dexterity to use items such as computers and to fill out reports; Ability to prioritize and take control of phone and radio situations; Ability to read, research, understand and explain criminal laws, department regulations, City ordinances, and other written material; Ability to work any day of the week and on different shifts; Ability to maintain proper certifications and licenses; Ability to input information accurately and efficiently; Ability to effectively and efficiently handle many incoming, continuous phone or radio calls where many are of a serious nature; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, members of the var! ious police, medic and fire jurisdictions and the public. SALARY: $23,441.60 to $34,049.60, annually APPLICATIONS may be obtained from the City Receptionist, 101 North Detroit Street, Xenia, Ohio, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday thru Friday. COMPLETED APPLICATIONS must be received by the City Receptionist, 101 North Detroit Street, Xenia, Ohio, prior to 5:00 p.m., Friday, April 7, 2000. WRITTEN EXAMINATION, will be conducted on April 17, 2000, 7:00 p.m., in the Cafeteria at Central Junior High School, 425 Edison Blvd., Xenia, Ohio. All applicants for entrance written examination and secondary testing must be present at the test site prior to the starting time. No provisions exist for late arrivals or personal circumstances.
