Guest guest
I run a support group for families with children with sensory integration problems (Caitlyn has severe SI problems) and I get a lot of calls from parents who want to learn more, etc. This week a woman called me whose child is dx with DS and autism. She just enrolled her child in 1st grade this year and didn't realize her school district would deny her kids any of the basic services (she just moved from Calif) so she didn't make these demands on the IEP. I couldn't believe it, none of the special needs kids in the district are allowed to get art class, music class, gym class, recess on the playground, or field trips!! The districts idea of music class is putting on a record in their resource room. Art class is crayons and paper, and recess is an occasionally walk around the bldg when someone has time. I realize that it all boils down to not wanting to pay for the aids needed to include these children but I thought these were fundamental rights since the last decade! This woman even joined the PTA at the beginning of the year and did many fundraisers to raise money for field trips which the kids go on every month. But after 5 months, her child (and every spec needs kid) has been barred by every field trip! Obviously this woman needs a new IEP and a good advocate, but even so, I think it's criminal that she is going to have to fight for these basic things! This school district of hers must be in the dark ages! Thanks for letting me vent. Jeanne
