I have a couple little stories to back up the statement that MDT's are

definitely

NOT private.

We had one dispatcher who made a joke about one of the officers to another

officer

via the MDT. Unfortunately, both officers were sitting in the car and the

officer

who was the " butt " of the joke actually received the message. It created a small

problem I am sure you can imagine.

But worse yet.....

One of our " new hires " apparently did not heed the warning about MDT

conversation.

She was what some of you call a " badge bunny. " (i love that term)

She was working a daywork after a night out with one of the officers in the

southern region of the county. The two of them were working, and proceeded to

have

a rather explicit conversation about their previous nights " activities. " Go

ahead.... use your imagination..... your thoughts will probably be fairly

accurate! Anyway,... the system apparently encountered a small glitch, and all

messages from both dispatcher and officer were being sent to an officers

terminal

in the northern region. This officer in the north was getting a blow by blow

description of our couples little party! Needless to say, when the north officer

" finally " decided to get to a phone and call us to advise us of the incident,

the

entire room was in hysterics. With the exception of one obviously.

I think that pretty much schooled everyone at the center that the MDT's were to

be

used appropriately. And I do agree that the terminals do allow for some level of

personalization and comraderie between dispatch and the street. You just need to

be

cuthfull. (sp?)

mdt=mobile data terminal

It's an onboard computer connected to the computer-aided dispatch system.

Not all agencies have them. If you have watched cops, and you have seen the

little computers, those are mdt's.

-- not all of them are connected to the cad system though.......our officers

have mdt's, and in dispatch we have cad, but the 2 systems are not currently

connected -- they are supposed to be sometime within the next 12-18 months,

but for now the officers are just connected with the other mdts.....--kim
