Subject: Re: 911 Pet Peeves

My biggest peeve is when officers dispatch themselves to calls. Now don't

get me wrong, if there is an in progress incident where my beat cars are

not available I welcome the offer. But when I need guys no one will step up

and volunteer to go out of their beat or a guy will say " 10-4

from " ....(usually the farthest point away)Timbuktu. If I had someone closer

I would use them! Just once I would like to say " 10-4 from the radioroom! "

We have one sergeant that not only insists on re-dispatching everything you

have just dispatched, he does it for precincts other than his own.

When there is a pursuit in the West or Canaveral, you can bet he's going to

be jumping all over that radio trying to take over even though it's not in

his precinct yet. One night I had a Canaveral guy in pursuit, logically his

sergeant would be the one to be in charge, but all that sergeant could do

was show up at the end. The one who likes to re-dispatch everything wouldn't

shut up long enough for the Canaveral sergeant to get a word in. Then on top

of it the West sergeant thinks it's her duty to take over from the

re-dispatcher. She actually told the Canaveral guy to break off the pursuit

AFTER they had punctured all four of the suspect's tires with the stop

sticks.

I came about THIS CLOSE to keying in and saying, " OK, which one of you just

got promoted to countywide major and didn't tell anyone? "

I once said to the re-dispatching sergeant (who kind of looks like Boy

Walton) on the phone, " If you think you can do my job better than I can,

come on up, my seat is still warm. " That fixed him for a little while. But

every once in a while he will call me up just to ask me if the seat has

gotten cold yet.
