Guest guest
SSI is a needs based program so your family will need to qualify before your child is eligible. There is a resource test (money in the bank, value of car(s), property owned that you're not living on etc.) and an income test. There are certain amounts that are 'disregarded' in this equation but it's complicated. You need to go to your local SSI office or your state's DHS office to find out more. Some states offer a Medicaid Waiver called " Beckett" or TEFRA. This medicaid category only takes the child's income and resources into account when determining eligibility. This is administered at the state level. If your child is eligible for SSI, you'll get a small amount of money every month (calculated upon what your family's income is) and your child will receive Medicaid. As long as the child is eligible for $1.00 of SSI cash in a month, they'll receive the Medicaid. Your state's Medicaid program would determine what is or is not covered in regards to supplements, treatments etc. You would most likely have a primary care doctor who would need to evaluate all treatment requests and then provide referrals. If you have health insurance, your insurance would pay first and then Medicaid would pick up the remainder of any covered services. Receiving SSI means that your family must stay below the financial standards to keep receiving benefits. Bottom line - you need to talk with someone in your state (advocate, DHS) to find out what's available as every state is different. Also, are there any problems with putting them on SSI, as far as how it effects them in the future? Thanks!
