Guest guest
oh I hate to be the one to mention this but most dialation drops have mercury in them......and eggs Recovering from Autism is a marathonNOT a sprint, but FULLY possible!Read more about it on my BLOGs athttp://www.myspace.com/christelkinghttp://foggyrock.com/MyPage/recoveringwisheshttp://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=677063169 new-BLINKING reaction to dilating drops-tic I'm new to the group & desperately need advice for my 3.5 year old ASD son. 12 days ago I took him to the eye doc for his annual check-up (he wears glasses b/c his right eye crosses in). The doc put the Cyclogyl dilating drops in and 2 days later started blinking (hard & often) with both eyes. (Please see my blog for the video: http://matthewsautismjourney.blogspot.com/ ) has never done this before and he now does it all the time. I called the eye doc and he said he's never heard of a reaction like this and told me to put saline drops in 's eyes whenever he blinks and that will teach him not to blink. Well, I'm NOT going to punish my son for his involuntary blinking...he is not doing it on purpose! I took him to an eye ER over the weekend and the young doc there actually wanted to put more dilating drops in to examine him...I walked out. So I took to the pediatrician on Monday and he said it's a "tic" and there's no cause or cure for it, and it might go away in a few months or he might have it forever. He said there is a slim chance it could be allergies so I am to give 1 tsp of Claritin for 3 days to see if that makes a difference (so far it has not). I also contacted my DAN (Dr Megson) and she wants me to get blood work done to check for PANDAS. I really don't think this is strep-related....I know in my heart those eye drops set off the tic and I cry every time I see my beautiful boy (who has enough issues as it is) blinking uncontrollably. Has anyone ever heard of this? Do you have any advice for me? I have one more doctor I can try...his neuro, but she keeps hammering us to do an MRI and I think this would send her over the edge. I've been avoiding the MRI b/c I'm afraid of regression due to sedation (and the ped said an MRI is not a diagnostic tool for tics). did have a 24 hour EEG in August to test for absence seizures (he has occasional staring spells) but none showed up. Thanks for reading this and accepting me into your group, Cyndi N. PS I forgot to add that is taking Ketoconzaole for yeast and I called the pharmacy and they said a possible side effect is light sensitivity (which is also a side effect of the Cyclogyl) but he's been blinking for 10 days now (even in the dark) and he had been on the Keto. more than a week before this started. Guest guest
What a tough experience for you and your son to have to go through! It took a bit of Googling to find a full list of the ingredients, but here they are. The info that I read also indicated that children can be extra sensitive to this drug...I've listed 2 excerpts of side effects, but the list is not limited to what's on these lists. Sounds like your eye doctor and ER don't have a clue what to do. For "overdose" of this cyclogyl they do say to call poison control. Apparently, it CAN cause behavioral and neurological reactions, too. Have you spoken again with your eye doctor...he should be responsible enough to follow up on this for you with his drug reps and colleagues, especially since he took the responsability to choose this for your son. I wish I knew more to do! Ingredients cyclopentolate hydrochloride 10 mg/mL, an anticholinergic agent (Chemical name: 2-dimethylaminoethyl (RS)-2-(1-hydroxycyclopentyl)-2-phenylacetate hydrochloride) Inactive ingredients: CYCLOGYL Eye Drops also contain boric acid, disodium edetate, potassium chloride, sodium carbonate and/or hydrochloric acid (to adjust pH), purified water and benzalkonium chloride (0.1 mg/mL) as preservative. Side Effects All medicines can have side effects. Sometimes they are serious, most of the time they are not. You may need medical treatment if you get some of the side effects. Tell your doctor as soon as possible if you do not feel well while you are using CYCLOGYL Eye Drops. Most side effects from CYCLOGYL Eye Drops occur in, or around, the eye. These include: * Increased pressure in the eye; * Burning and irritation; * Sensitivity to light; * Blurred vision; * Redness and irritation of the eyelid. The effect that CYCLOGYL Eye Drops has on the eye(s) usually does not last longer than 24 hours. In some individuals, however, complete recovery may require several days. Occasionally some people notice unwanted effects in the rest of their body as a result of using CYCLOGYL Eye Drops. There is a greater chance of such side effects occurring if CYCLOGYL Eye Drops are used in children. Tell your doctor immediately if any of the following side effects are noticed: * Mental and behavioural disturbances (e.g. unsteady walk, failure to recognise people); * Restlessness; * Hallucinations; * Seizures (or fits); * Disorientation. Let your doctor know if you observe any unwanted effects while using CYCLOGYL Eye Drops, even if they do not appear in the lists above. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Adverse Effects Ocular Increased intraocular pressure, burning, photophobia, blurred vision, irritation, hyperaemia, conjunctivitis, blepharoconjunctivitis, punctate keratitis, synechiae. Systemic Use of cyclopentolate has been associated with psychotic reactions and behavioural disturbances in children. These disturbances include ataxia, incoherent speech, restlessness, hallucinations, hyperactivity, seizures, disorientation as to time and place, and failure to recognise people. This drug produces reactions similar to those of other anticholinergic drugs, however, the central nervous system manifestations as noted above are more common. Other toxic manifestations of anticholinergic drugs are tachycardia, hyperpyrexia, vasodilation, urinary retention, diminished gastrointestinal motility and decreased secretion in salivary and sweat glands, pharynx, bronchii and nasal passages. Severe manifestations of toxicity include coma, medullary paralysis and death.
Guest guest
Yes, it all started with my 5 yo ASD son at age 4 with a blinking tic. We did an MRI and lumbar puncture, and both were normal. Looking back on this stage of our son's regressive autism, the best advice I have is to remove gluten and casine (milk) and to increase vitamins, cod liver oil is good. Our next step on the journey involved a herbal homeopathy called UNDA #s. This and the diet eliminated all tics. http://www.autismpedia.org/wiki/index.php?title=Will#Responds_to_GFCF_and_Homeop\ athy Please report what therapies, if any, you are currently doing.
