I try to read each day's mail, and then read earlier mail to get a fuller picture of things from the past month. My wonderful wife, Lucy, has kept me informed on things I needed to know. (EG, Jeanne's nomination as JC Penney Golden Rule Volunteer of the Year) For those of you who don't know me, I teach 16 yo girl with CHARGE. I began in January of 1998 as a 1 month temporary situation until they could find a teacher for her. The situation is now permanent. Because of past behavior problems [hers, not mine] my situation is, as I describe it " One on one with [her]. " Then as people show their shock, I respond with " But don't worry, I have a paraprofessional working with me so I am not outnumbered. " This year, because of a new medication situation, Kayla has not been as violent. Unfortunately, at the same time it seems like she is not as interested in learning at the same rate as last year. Now, for those interested in reasons for my lack of input...(this is personal folks...you are not compelled to read this. <g>) 1) I organized our State Scholastic Chess Tournament held March 12-14. It was the largest in the country AFAIK with over 1300 kids in two hotels. 2) In the midst of that, my daughter had a ruptured appendix. She sees the surgeon today to get her final release, hopefully. 3) Our school district, and our school, is preparing for an extensive State Monitoring Visit. Instead of being able to concentrate on teaching, I have needed to focus more on getting the paperwork in order. For example, I hate numerical grades for kids like Kayla. I think that they do not reveal any worthwhile information to the parents. I have been working with progress reports (oral and written) off of her IEP. My dept. chair did not like that, so now I have to go back and make sure they are numerical grades. (Doesn't an 81% in " Personal Skills " tell you so much more than a report on the behaviors etc that have been tested/checked? ::sigh:: see my sig file for my comment on that) Bob (teacher to Kayla -- 16 y.o.) Guest guest
Re: bob >Bob, tell your department head that written anacdotal reporting based on the IEP is the way it is done in ONTARIO's provincial school . To really flip him out...for our March mid-term report we use photograghs of the students in activity with a short comment on what we were working on. The parents have positive comments about these. The deafblind have been seen as having unique needs and have been granted an acception to the new provincial wide system. The provincial review process is looking at our report system for use with exceptionalities .
