Guest guest
, we have this problem too. We bought some lidocaine at the pharmacy (non-prescription) to numb his skin at the injection site. It was expensive ($40 for a small tube) and I'm not sure how much it helps, but he did do much better when we used it, but he was also several years old than the last time when it was AWFUL! So, this is an alternative to something he ingests in case you wanted to try it. > > My ds has to have a blood draw on the 17th. It was SO traumatic for > him the last time it was done. Guest guest
With my daughter, Ativan worked the opposite of its intended effect. She was given a dose one evening and was WIDE awake until 5 am the next morning. She finally went to bed because she got bored! Just something to consider... > > My ds has to have a blood draw on the 17th. It was SO traumatic for > him the last time it was done. Guest guest
We use Ativan as needed for agitation, sleep and medical procedures (including lab draws.) There is one thing to file away in the back of your mind. Occasionally, children can have a paradoxical reaction to this and other benzos. That means it has the opposite effect of what it is supposed to do. We've have had this happen sometimes. My ds has to have a blood draw on the 17th. It was SO traumatic for him the last time it was done. They had to poke him multiple times and he had to be pinned into a papoose board. It took 45 minutes and they didn't even get all the blood they needed before we made them stop. We will be doing it at his new DAN's office this time, so they should have more experience there, but we still expect it to be bad. His DAN had us order Ativan to give him an hour before the draw. We are supposed to give him half of a dose ahead of time to make sure he tolerates it and to see if he only needs a half dose or a whole. We are SOOOO careful about everything that we put in his body that I am terrified, quite frankly. It arrived today and I should dose him, but I don't want to. Of course, I had to go look at the possible side effects which has made me feel worse. It isn't that I don't trust his doctor, but I trusted his previous doctor and look where THAT got us. Have any of you used Ativan? Should I not feel so freaked out? I would like for him to be more relaxed through the blood draw, but I am having trouble with the idea of drugging him.
