We love Klaire Detox probiotic. We've had no negative side effects and the only one I can say we see sustained benefits. I do rotate it with VSL but I like the Detox the best.

Hi everyone -

Is there a probiotic that everyone on here seems to agree is the best? I am unsure which one to buy, as I know there is a lot of variation.

Also, my son's sleep is really irregular since staring the valtrex. He used to sleep until 7am all the time. Now it is all over the place, sometimes he gets up at 4am for the day. Can anyone recommend a really good, safe sleep aid?

thanks everyone,

Marisa

For the probiotic..I think it differs for each child in what is tolerable and works.

If you are just starting I would suggest avoiding any with the strep strain as many

kids dont tolerate this well. Some do fine with it but avoiding it when starting will

possibly save you from wasting your valuable money : ) For my son Custom Probiotics

lactate free has worked best. It is pricey but in fact lasts much longer than the other

bottles of probiotics we have purchased.

I also use melatonin once in a while for sleep issues. My son is 2.5 and takes 1/2

to 1 mg. If i give it for a few weeks he then seems to sleep fine without if for about a month.

It is a great antioxidant also.

Hope this helps

My son had a terrible problem with this probiotic and I found this after the fact on their website (he has such trouble with any dairy)...

http://www.vsl3.com/VSL3/about-faq.asp#faq-16

Can I take VSL#3® if I have an intolerance to dairy products?

Some dairy ingredients are used in the culture medium but are removed during fermentation and concentration. There might be trace amounts at very low levels and, for this reason, VSL#3® is not defined as a dairy-free product but as a non-dairy product. Evidence suggests that probiotics may be useful in the treatment of patients with lactose maldigestion and lactase deficiency. Recent studies have demonstrated that lactose is better digested from yogurt than from milk by lactase-deficient individuals and yogurt ingestion by these patients is paralleled by reduced symptoms. Many patients confirmed that their intolerance was greatly reduced with the use of VSL#3®. If you are lactose intolerant, you may wish to start with a very low intake of VSL#3® to see how you respond before increasing the amount.

Christel I respectfully disagree and believe there is more to this

issue. I pulled this info from the site and have consulted with this

company. The dairy issue is confusing to most. It's similar to the

area of fermentation using sugar in the medium to promote bacteria

growth.

When I make fermented vegetables I add a form of sugar, but the

fermentation removes this sugar.

Many would stay away from VSL thinking it has dairy in it. When in

fact, the strains of bacteria cultured are what is needed for the

original problem of intolerance/sensitivity to begin with.

From my consults and research, VSL #3 is just about the best

probiotic available. I use this with my son. I believe the issue

needs more further exploration if in doubt.

Just to add to the discussion and things to think about, the

information provided by the comapny that is quoted below says:

" If you are lactose intolerant, you may wish to start with a very low

intake of VSL#3® to see how you respond before increasing the amount. "

That is addressing the issue of lactose intolerance rather than

casein intolerance. Lactose intolerance is when your body does not

produce the enzymes necessary to break down the milk sugar. A person

with only lactose intolerance can take digestive enzymes and resolve

the digestive issues that occur when they ingest lactose (milk sugar).

Casein intolerance is an intolerance to the milk protein. Five out

of the six in my family have casein intolerance. We wouldn't try

VSL#3 because it has trace amounts of casein. The lactose issue is

addressed in Question #16 at the top of this brochure and the casein

issue (and soy) is addressed in Question #14 at the bottom:

http://www.orphan.com.au/pdfs/VSLLeaflet_0307.pdf

Interestingly, after reading Question #14 where they talk about the

minimal risk of casein and soy, their label reads that it contains

trace amounts of casein, but no soy:

http://www.nbnus.net/shopexd.asp?id=303

Just more food for thought.
