Does anyone else have a child that "EEEEE"'s? Our son when very excited or stimmy makes that vocal sound. Up to date we have not found anything that really has gotten rid of it or has really even reduced it much. Does anyone have any suggestions why he does it and how to reduce it? What are we missing?

I agree w/this. My son makes a ton of "eee" and other sounds and noises. He also exhibits a lot of frustration through sounds and body language. My husband and I both agree all of this appears to be his way of communicating and/or his frustration when he cannot. It is sad but at the same time hopeful because I can tell there is a little boy in there who so badly wants and tries to come out.

-------------- Original message --------------

Yes. My son says, "eeeeeee" regularly. But he is nonverbal. If hecould talk, I'm sure he'd say, "Wow! That's cool." or "Hey, come checkthis out!", or he'd be singing along to his favourite song. He oftendoes this when playing toys that sing or play music because I alwayssing along. He wants to sing along too, but says "eeeeeee" instead.I'm sure it's very frustrating for him to not have the vocabulary. Buthe has apraxia of speech, and will grab from the sounds he can makejust because he wants desperately to say something. If child is verbal and says "eeeeeee" that's probably a stim. But ifhe's nonverbal, I'd suggest that the child is vocalizing in whateverway he can. It's usually a sign that the child wants to speak (whichis good and shouldn't be quashed).Children often run around screaming after they begin to have theirfirst successful vocal exchanges at speech therapy. They learn the joyof vocalizing but don't h

I am a Defeat Autism Now! provider in Indiana. I previously worked

for ten years in neuropsychology - doing comprehensive neuropsych

evals on kids and adults with Developmental Disabilities. My

suspicion is that our kids use the " eeeeeeee " sound rather than any

of the other vowel sounds because this requires less movement of

their jaws and muscles to produce. Try it and you will notice that

in order to make the " oooohhhhh " or " iiiiii " or " aaaaa " or

even " uuuuu " sounds you have to work your jaw more. I think this may

be an indication that one of the things preventing further oral

expression is pain in the jaw - think " lockjaw " and tetanus.

I recall a study I found a while back where a third world country

received some tainted vaccines and a significant portion of the

children developed tetanus as a result. The antidote: B6 and

magnesium. I would suggest checking to see if your child is getting

enough of these supplements and consider going up to see if you get

good results.

I will be interested to hear if you notice positive change.

This is EXACTLY what my son does! He wiggles his fingers or rubs his hands together, almost like wringing them, while he does the vocal stim. This is usually when he spins something and then does this in reaction. I just read the post about adding B6 and magnesium (I think that's what it was) so it will be intersting to see if this helps.

We have this too. It seems to come and go - mostly when he has unoccupied time or on his own and is stimmy. We say "quiet mouth" - it breaks his concentration and works for a while, then we may need to say again. I haven't found anything biomedically to stop this ...yet. SO working on it as a behavior, with your ABA people is a pretty good way to go.Nora My son says "Eeeee" so much that a typical child keeps reminding me that my son does talk, He says"e." if the finger waving this would mean meales titers off the charts in our house, (cronic infection) and vit A would be needed to correct this. we used to have laddle laddle laddle all day, vit A and yeast fighting stopped it.

I am going to have insurance in the next few weeks (yay!!!) and I will be getting titers done on my kids. We have been fighting yeast and seemed to have it under control--but who knows. This behavior never seemed to be affected by anything we did for yeast.

Thanks for the honest reply! It can be very overwhelming when you hear it all the time. When my little guy is engaged, he stops! I wish I could have him engaged constantly, but that is extremely difficult.

We have had it for as long as I remember. Sometimes I think if we could just get rid of that, he would seem 100% better. He is somewhat verbal, so I think it is a sti for him. Thanks for the smile!

I have had the EEEEs and the MMMMs and gunk gunk gunk for quite a while also, I thought when he was doing the EEEs he wanted to eat, so we would go to his chair and I would feed him. He does do the EEEs even when I know he is not hungry.

Maybe our kid's have a secret language that we can't decode, like from some far off planet! LOL
