Is the prednisone enough for my dh's adrenals?

My dh is on prednisone for his arthritis. He was down to 1mg a day, but the swelling in his hands started up again and the doctor raised him up to 5mgs a day. He initially started prednisone about 2 and a half years ago. At that time he started on 10 mgs and after approximately 6 months the doctor started to lower his dose. He has really gone nice and slow with lowering his dose.

Anyway, I think my dh is in need of Armour and he is willing to give it a try. Is the prednisone he is on all he should need for his adrenals? Am I correct in presuming that his adrenals have been, over the past 2 and a half years and currently, effectively supported?

I also have him taking Iodoral, Celtic Sea Salt and CALM magnesium citrate powder. I have checked his basal temp and it is consistently below 97.8, his blood pressure has recently gone up and his cholesterol has increased over the past couple years into the 220's range. He is much more tired than he use to be. Falls asleep in his chair in the evening, pretty much every evening. But he does not sleep as well, at night, as he always has. He is 61, still works and is basically in very good health with the exception of Rhuematoid arthritis. Over the course of the past 5 years he has had carpal tunnel surgery, about 5 years ago. He was having trouble with both wrists, but after the surgery on his one hand, the other one has never bothered him since. He has had two hernia surgeries, and back surgery. Also, over the course of the past 3 and a half years, I have had 8 surgeries, so I would presume all of this has greatly contributed to his stress and adrenal fatigue.

I feel that the prednisone has been what has kept him from total crash and burn. I think I am right, but not sure, does this sound reasonable? I ordered a bottle of thyroid s and hopefully it will arrive soon. Should I be able to start him on the thyroid s and not worry about anything else for adrenals, because of him already being on 5mgs prednisone?

Supported or suppressed depending on the dose! 10MG a day of pred

suppresses the adrenals completely. That is equal to 40MG HC plus the

factor that pred is a stronger drug as it sytays in your system longer.

5MG a day of the Pred should be a good maintanance dose while he starts

Armour. Juts make sure he starts low (30MG) and goes up solowly as his

adrenals may be suppressed mroe than you realize. 2.5 years is a LONG

time to be on steroids. But on the positive side, I have been on a high

dose of HC and am now coming back down from 30 MG am at 20MG wiht NO

problems, but getting some thyrooid in him may help his adrenals recover.

Yes the pred may be keeping him going, and he will likely need it for

life, but low thyroid can be the cause of Carpal Tunnel! And it also

causes joint pains that are very similar to RA! You may find a much

happier man on Armour!

It sounds to me like you've got a pretty good handle on all of this!

The 5mg pred is equal to 20mg hc, so that should be fine. With those

hypo symptoms, I bet Thyroid-s will help him a lot!

The 5MG Pred should be plenty for adrenals. I agree he may evenfind a

lessening of the arthritis with thyroid added to the mix.

Well him needing Armour is why he can't come off the pred entirely. As

long as his thyroid is low his adrenals cannot heal enough to take over

the full duty they should be doing, so consider THAT another hypo symptom.

Thanks Deborah,

With the brain fog, although greatly reduced, I still have trouble

seeing the whole picture at times. It is good to get some

confirmation on what you thing is the right course of action. LOL

Sometimes I think I would prefer if the doctor would put my dh on HC,

but then he would have to take it several times over the course of a

day and he would prefer to take it just once a day. So, I need to

" don't fix, what ain't broke. " I need to just leave it alone, cause

it is working fine as is. LOL

Isn't it a horror to realize how many people have lived shortened

miserable lives and mostly due to undiagnosed/untreated hypo? There is

both Diabetes and Emphysema in my family as well as congestive heart

failure, and alot of hypertension. They have all been on

antidepressants, or statins or BP meds. Several have been on Thyrolar or

Synthroid. NOne till me have ever been on Armour. I intend to break this

chain of misery.

Another very good point. It is a good thing that the doctor

increased his prednisone, recently, now he should have a better

time of it with the Armour.
