Kenda,

I thought isocort was another form of hydrocortisone. Is it? I was given a prescription for cortef (hydocortisone) from my alternative Md. I am afraid to take it though because I haven't tried the natural remedies yet, such as adrenal cortical extract and licorice root.... until I know exactly what is going on I don't really know what I should do.

Is Isocort something you can buy over the counter? It was recommended to me in the past actually but I never followed up on it.

Another totally wierd thing is showing up on my blood work... I am vitamin D deficient to the point where it is almost an emergency. I don't know what the heck is going on with my body. Maybe I have a hole in my intestine the size of a grapefruit! Gotta get to the bottom of this though.

Please tell me alittle more about the isocort.

Thanks,

Dawn

Hi Dawn,

No, Isocort is an adrenal supplement. Below is a bit I found on line about

it. I have taken licorice for adrenal support but it has never helped me.

In my case, it seems my adrenals needed more than support, they need to be

assisted, as does my thyroid. I take 1 grain of Westhroid per day as well.

Isocort turned my lack of energy totally around. I used to be very

lethargic before taking Isocort. There were several places on line that

sell it and it isn't very expensive. :)

As far as your Vitamin D shortage, I pulled this out of my school book:

Vitamin D is involved in normal cell growth and maturation and in regulating

the immune system. It aids the assimilation and regulates levels in the

blood of minerals such as calcium and phosphorus from the digestive tract,

having an important role for bones and the prevention of tooth decay,

pyorrhea and rickets. It helps to regulate the heart, nervous system and

tissue through its regulation of calcium levels. It protects against food

additives, lead and insecticide residue in food. It is essential for the

health of the thyroid and parathyroid glands and relates over activity of

the parathyroid. Studies have found that taking vitamin C and D reduced the

risk of further cartilage damage for people suffering from osteoarthritis of

the knees.

Interesting the link between immune system and Vitamin D!

Oh, one other thing. My vet was deciding whether or not to test my Golden

Retriever for 's Disease. He decided not to because his sodium and

potassium levels are normal and ian dogs are never normal range

sodium/potassium. I have no idea if the same holds true for humans but it

might be worth it to research it and check your labs to see if there is an

imbalance.

I hope this helps some.

Kenda, Wow, thanks for this info... any recommendations where to buy the Isocort? Did you actually have adrenal testing done? Or, were you prescribed this based upon your symptoms?

Thanks..

Dawn,

I had testing done and my adrenals are weak. I got a fax of lab work I did

a week ago and it looks like they are still weak, at least that's my

unprofessional diagnoses. :) I see Dr. Leu next week to see what he has to

say about it.

Do a Google search for Bezwecken Isocort. There were lots of places that

advertised it on Google. It's about $25 a bottle.

I am not sure what the Isocort actually provides. When I see the

word Cortisol, I have red flags going up, knowing that too much

cortisol is actually bad for us. It is the hormone that is produced

when we are under stress.

I took Isocort when I was first sick too, because tests showed I had

a drop in cortisol in the afternoon. I can't say the Isocort helped

me though. I just didn't see a huge positive response. That is not

to say it wouldn't help in the long term. My ND didn't seem to push

it very hard though, and I moved on to other therapies. I am sure

that many of us have adrenal involvement, as evidenced by the

nightsweats, panic attacks, and fatigue, but whether that is from

adrenal exhaustion, or hormonal swings, I don't know. Testing is a

great idea.

Here is a link that I highly recommend before taking any cortisol

supplements.

Isocort definitively isn't for everyone. It has been nothing short of a

miracle for me but that isn't to say it would be for everyone else. I am

also a test junkie and monitor all of my supplements carefully.
