Guest guest
MK . . . Personally, I'd find another doctor. The doctors we recommend don't care if the implant is over or under the muscle. . . They take it all out, if at all possible. IMHO, What your doctor describes is what allows plastic surgeons to tell women that removing their implants will not make them well and that their illness is not because of their implants. If your implant was contaminated on implanting, the capsule that surrounds the implant contains microganisms. If your implant is leaking, the organism may be contained by the capsule. This can be spilled into your chest when the implants are removed. As implants age, they shed particles. . . These are contained by the capsules. I know you want to keep it simple and see an easily accessible doctor - but in this case, it's worth taking the time and trouble to find a doctor who will do the job right so you can get well! I needed to hear this. I called my PS after I got your reply to my post and pleaded my case to get the capsules out. I found some info online and read it to the PS. I was told it would take an extra 30 min per side and I would have a larger scar. I don't care, as I just want this done right. As of right now I planning on Friday. Although the secretary told me that with the added time it may not work. Please pray I can get these out. I just had my appointment with rheumatology this morning and just need them out. Hugs and thanks again for the support. MK
Guest guest
MK, Please tell your doctor what you want in writing and give it to your doctor along with the information that backs up the need to remove your implants en bloc before Friday! Monday, if possible! I feel so fortunate . . . At the time I had my implants removed, there weren't many docs willing to removed them at all! . . . I was given the name of a doc who had removed another woman's so I went to him. All knew was that I wanted was them OUT. I didn't know anything about en bloc or capsules . . . He did do a total capsulectomy, even though, to this day, he believes implants are safe and usually leaves the capsules! . . . I believe the Lord held his hands! Many of the women explanted (usually gel implants) during that time period are just as sick, sicker or dead. So it's very, very important that they be removed properly! We've found some doctors who SAY they will remove them properly, only to find out later they didn't do it right - according to their post-op report. You must be firm! Guest guest
My thoughts are that you need to be firm in requesting a total capsulectomy...the drains are a good idea, but those implants need to be removed properly so that you don't have any reason to be concerned about " leftovers " in the future. Leftover implant scar tissue is no good. Doctors frequently will say they will do their " best " to get it all out, but then state they just couldn't because it was too hard to get at it. This is their " out " . It takes more skill and time to do a proper explant, so make sure your doctor is going to care about you and your health as a patient, not just the money he is going to get for his time. Gosh, I hope that doesn't sound too harsh...I know there are kind doctors out there, but just be sure this person will do what is really, really needed! By the way, mine were put in under the muscle, and I had a total capsulectomy (en bloc) removal. It took about 4 hours with a lift, so if the doctor knows what they are doing, they will get it all. Guest guest
Thanks for your reply to my concern. I am really nervous about the whole procedure. How can I be sure that I will get the whole thing out? I know there is a consent that you sign prior to suregery. The surgeon that I talked to to about total removal said at first that they just do some of the tissue removal. Then after I started to explain why I wanted the whole thing removed he said fine, but said I would have a larger scar (I don't care) and said it would require 30 min more per side. I am concerned though, as he said that the chest wall/ribs can some times be involved making it impossible to always get all of the tissue. Is this true? This whole thing is such a nightmare. Thanks again for all the support! Guest guest
MK, I'd suggest writing to Dr. Kolb (one of the ladies here can give you her email address) and ask her under what conditions part of the capsule may need to be left behind. Also, you can see her website at www.plasticos.com. Her email address is probably there. She's been very generous with her time, even if she's not your doctor. She's one of our most highly recommended doctors. As far as dealing with your doctor, you will have to decide if you trust him to do what he says! . . . Some doctor's I'd trust, others I wouldn't.
