Hello, I am in the same boat as you. I have surgery scheduled for May 18th. But, like you, I was looking here as a final look. I am extremely torn. Perhaps we should talk more about what our research has found.

Should I?

I have been considering breast augmentation for...well just about since I was a teenager. I have done a lot of research over the years and am pretty much fluent in all of the information I have read and reviewed. I joined this group for a final look into the risks of the surgery and am wondering if it is really worth it to get implants. Part of me has completely accepted the risks and still wants to have the surgery, but the other half sees that maybe it isn't worth it! WHat do you think ? Does anyone have any unbiased advice?

I think you have to weigh the risks for yourself. You have to know

that you will have to have repeat surgeries to replace implants, as

they last 7-10 years. Some do not last this long, some last a little

longer. You have to know they are in a silicone shell, and that the

shell is not bio-compatible, so a capsule will form. Whether or not

it will harden and be misshapen is dependent on how your body reacts

to it. You have to know that it creates problems for mammography,

and can obscure as much as 60% of the breast tissue. And, you have

to know that many women's bodies reject implants and they have to be

removed, which costs more than implantation.

There are many other considerations, breast feeding, numbness of the

nipple and loss of sensation, scarring, etc.

And, there are health risks. I am sure you have been reading about those.

If you weigh all those and still want implants, then at least you are informed.

Lynda

P.S. I am a social worker. I think we all need to be in charge of

our decisions, but we truly must be informed.

Hi Ladies,

If you've been researching through the proimplant

websites like 's . . . please know that they

exist for the purpose of promoting breast implants and

plastic surgeons. When we go to those sites and try to

tell women about the dangers, they delete our message

and ban us from the group.

If want the mildest version of the truth, check out

Mentor or Inamed's own warnings on their website, or

the FDA's website on breast implants. . . Sorry I

don't have the addresses, but they should be easy to

find.

Best wishes,

Rogene

It is totally not worth it. Getting implants was the worse decision

I have ever made and they destroyed my health. What will either be

downplayed or not reported at all in the research you've been doing

is what it can do to your immune system. In my opinion, larger

breasts are not worth losing your health over, and I would do

anything if I could go back one year in time and reverse all that

has happened to my body. If you go to the pro-implant sites, they

will tell you that the studies say there is no relation at all

between breast implants and immune sickness. That is untrue, and

all of us on the site can attest to that. Studies can be tailored

to provide the results desired by those performing the study, and no

one has studied the people who get sick. All of us on this site

have the same or similar symptoms, which began after we got

implants, and most of the time improved after we had them removed.

However, that's not a guarantee that you can get the implants, and

if you get sick you can simply have them removed and feel better.

Your body might never be the same. I only had mine a few weeks

before my lymph nodes swelled up, my joints got sore and swollen,

and basically my health went down the tubes. I wish I had found

this site when I was researching. I got the implants in May of 2005

and had them explanted in November of 2005. I spent about $14,000

dollars, and I could have enjoyed a nice vacation, get a hot tub, I

could have spent my money much wiser. All I have to show for that

money is empty pockets (and yes, that's a play on words). Those

were the absolute worst 6 months of my life. I hated the implants

from day one, it did nothing for my confidence (in fact it took away

my confidence). Confidence comes from within, and it takes more

than a set of plastic boobs to be a woman. It's hard to be unbiased

when my life has been turned upside down by implants, and when I

know that the manufacturers are providing faulty data, and when the

FDA is pretending that none of us on this site exist. If you decide

to get implants, I hope your body accepts them, but the risk of

getting sick from them is there, and your plastic surgeon will turn

his/her back on you if you get sick, as will many of your other

doctors. By the way, I had saline implants - the ones that everyone

says are " safe " .

Listen to the voices in your head that brought you to this site.

Good luck.

I have an unbiased opinion, I was in your shoes one year ago. I joined the

group for the same reason you have and decided not to implant. I have

stayed with the list to help these women with health issues anyway I can.

Is anything worth giving your health up for? Can you imagine being in the

shoes of any one of the women whose story you have read here? Can you

imagine being sick and knowing that you knew full well, the risks involved

but wanted larger breasts anyway? These are the things that went through my

head when I decided against implanting. I decided nothing in this world was

worth possibly trading my health for.

Have you read the FDA handbook on implants. It lists all of the

risks. I was misled in thinking that was only silicone gel

implants. I even signed papers saying I knew the risks. Too bad

life doesn't let you turn back time.

Dear Ladies,

If I had to say just one thing about whether or not to get breast

implants, I would say this: At least wait until you are finished

having children! That is the first and foremost consideration in

taking on the risks of breast implants, in my opinion. If you plan

on having children, they deserve the best chance to enter this world

in a healthy way. Breast implants are a risk to them that is rarely

acknowledged. There are many women living with the tragedy and

regret of having children who are sick as a result of their breast

implants, and the guilt that is carried is unimaginable.

Exposing developing fetuses to implants is a tragedy that doesn't

have to happen.

If you are finished having all the children that you plan on having,

then you can be free to make a decision on risking your own health

for the sake of larger breasts. I know how hard this is.....when I

finally got implants, I had wanted them a very long time. I don't

think I would have wanted to hear anything negative about them.

Sometimes the desire to have implants overrides anything else we

desire in life....something that we can either give in to, or think

through more clearly and rearrange priorities and outlooks. It is a

learning experience any way you look at it.

But, please, keep in mind the most important consideration, and that

is the health of your future children and the stability of your

future family. If you are married now with or without children, the

future happiness and health of your entire family is at stake.

I would like to add that if you have children think of what you want

for them. I know I want the best for my children. I once thought

that breast implants made me beautiful and a better mommie. I don't

think it is beautiful that my 6 year old son has to help mommie get

up the stairs to bed at night. Nor do I think I am giving my

children the best when I haul my 3 year old son and 17 month old

daughter to more doctor appointments than playdates. These

appointments have all been for me. I also don't think it is fair to

my children that mommie can't even crawl around on the floor to play

with them. One year ago I was super mom -- a year later I just pray

that I live to see my children grow-up. I got saline textured

implants in 2000.

How smart you both are to research before you get implants! I wish

I had done the same, although I don't know that anyone could have

convinced me not to get them. I was very small and wanted cleavage

for once in my life! I waited until after kids and I am glad they

haven't had to suffer ill health because of them. However - they

have had to deal with my sickness for the last 6 years. I just

can't be the mom that I want to be because I am too sick. The

implants are a foreign body inside of you and MANY women have

reactions to them that may or may not be reversed after explant. I

had mine explanted in October and am still struggling to regain my

health. Now that the implants are gone, it is so wonderful to just

be my little self - without these big hard bags hanging from me ALL

the time!

I really hope that you take the women on this site seriously - we

have all been through so much. If we can save even one other person

from making the same horrible mistake, then all our suffering will

all have been worth it.

God bless,

Cherie

I just want to thank everyone for their advice. I am truly sorry for

all of the problems you are experiencing from the implants. It is

just so crazy that there isn't really any good information about the

complications from implants. It seems like all of the results are

downplayed, and then you speak to real people like you guys, who have

copletely different stories.

Thanks again for all of your help. Best wishes

Hi

I am glad that you have checked out this group to hopefully gain a

balanced perspective on getting implants. You asked for an unbiased

opinion but no one anywhere can give you that. All opinions are

based on our experiences, the facts, and the experiences of others.

Based on my experience, that of many other women I know, and the

facts...I would say that getting implants is playing russian

roulette. My experience: implants almost killed me. I had them

out four years ago after having them for eleven. Of that eleven

years, most of it was downhill. The last year was a fast descent

into serious autoimmune disease. Of the four years after getting

them out...I spent many thousands of dollars on trying to get

better -- first with the expensive explant surgery, and then with

supplements, detoxes, cleanses, doctors visits, etc. I am

significantly recovered and am very thankful for God for directing

me to this site so that I could find out what was making me so

sick.

There are hundreds of women on this site who have gotten sick from

implants and more coming everyday. Each time someone actually gets

their story out to the public in some small way, we get many

newcomers in the following weeks. That is because there are so many

women out there with implants who are sick and don't know why. They

have been going from doctor to doctor and when they ask if the

implants could be making them sick they are told no Most women who

come here are so relieved to find out what they already suspected in

their hearts--they are sick from their implants.

Facts show that implants are capable of causing immune dysfunction

and immune disease in a variety of ways. Some women react to the

silicone shell. Many women have had ruptured implants. If they

contained silicone gel, it is now in the body. Even the shell can

degrade and shed silicone fibers into the body. My shell had become

thinner in places. Where did that silicone go? Some women react

to the other ingredients in the shell--things like toulene, benzene,

and platinum. Some women get sick because the valves were defective

and allowed organisms to travel back and forth from the body and

implant. Some women have had implants taken out that were black.

Many implants, once analysed after removal, have been found to be

contaminated with molds, etc.

I had saline implants and because I was so flat they never looked or

felt normal. I looked kind of like I had 2 balls on my chest. They

didn't feel like normal breasts, and they hurt alot. YOu could feel

the tab and the edges of implant where the seam was. I dont know

why you are getting implants but all the women on this site would

tell you it was the worst decision they ever made.

Do I know women who aren't sick from implants? Maybe. I know women

who don't appear to be sick, at least at this point in time. I

didn't get really really sick for about ten years. We are seeing

more and more women on this site getting sick only months after

surgery--young women who aren't even married. Kacey was still a

teen when she got implants. She just appeared on Naomi Judd's talk

show the other day. Telling how implants ruined her health and how

she now spends all her time getting the word out. Kacey suffers now

from rheumatoid arthritis and fms, etc. She has experienced

improvement with explant but is not completely well. Not everyone

who smokes will get lung cancer or emphysema. But many will. Not

everyone who abuses their body with alcohol, drugs and too much of

the wrong kind of food will get diabetes, heart disease, etc. But

many will. Not everyone who gets implants will get sick, but a

significant portion will. At this point in time, there is no way to

tell if you will get sick or not. Being healthy beforehand is not a

predictor. Many many women on this site were very athletic and

healthy prior to implants. These same women in a matter of months

or a few years went to having to quit their jobs and being in

constant pain and fatigue with dizziness, brain fog, loss of hair

and other symptoms.

So I guess you have to ask yourself what is the best that can happen

and what is the worst that can happen? The best that can happen is

that you will have fake bags inside your body parading as breasts.

They won't feel or look the same as natural ones. They most likely

will have to be replaced at some point as they tend to rupture as

they age. You may have better selfesteem even though most men find

women attractive despite their breast size.

The worst that can happen is that you will lose the one thing that

is most precious to us---our health. Without health, nothing else

matters. Every relationship you have will suffer as you live in

constant pain and fatigue. You can kiss a career goodbye--

vacations, activities, etc.

I would say that if you can honestly accept the worst that can

happen and that is outweighed by the best that can happen, go for

it. But if you couldn't accept being sick, then I think you should

not get implants. That is what risk is all about. Never take risks

that you couldn't accept the outcome unless you have to. Since

getting breast implants is an entirely elective procedure, you don't

have to take the risk. And because of my experience I would have to

advise you not to. I am sure you have heard from those who say they

are not sick, and that could be the case, or it could be that they

aren't sick yet. But the main thing to remember is...it is a

risk..you could get lucky, or unlucky, just please understand that

this risk is real and it isn't as small as the manufacturers would

like you to believe. I hope that you pray about it and God gives

you a sense of peace about what direction to take. We have all been

there and I know how badly at one time I thought I wanted implants

too. Good luck.

I want to thank all of you ladies for your advice on the decision to

have breast implants done or not. I am so sorry to hear about all

of the horrible things that have happened to all of you. While

reading some of the posts, I was sitting here in tears. It really

upsets me that women are going through all of these things. I will

keep all of you in my prayers. Thanks again for all of your time, I

really truly appeciate it. I pray that you all start feeling better

very soon.

Thank you for your nice post. I really appreciate it. If you

decide not to get implants, I hope that you will tell others about

this site if they are not sure whether to get implants, and also

those who might have implants and have health problems but don't

have a clue that the implants could be the cause. I am praying that

God will guide you to the right decision for you. Stay healthy!

Thanks, Kate

There have been women on this site considering writing a book. I am

not sure of the status of that anymore. However, I do think it

would be a great idea for us to each write our own story and then

have one person put it together in one book. That could really make

a statement! I am not sure how we would go about getting them out

in distribution then. Any ideas ladies?

I think there has been talk of our girls writing books ever since I

became involved in the breast implant issue. There is no shortage of

stories, and there is no shortage of desire to " get the word out " .

I read several of them when I became ill. There was the one written

by Gloria Bywalec and her sister who was an RN that included many

stories of women sick from implants. Gloria has saline implants.

BETRAYED

by Gloria L. Bywalec and Marie Rzeppa

Gloria's private experience with saline implants that took her

health.

1996, JMJ Publishing

Canton, MI 48187-0203

ISBN: 0-9652174-0-X

Another one was

BREAST IMPLANTS: FROM HELL TO HEALING

By Donna Townes

1997, Donna Townes

ISBN: 1573970107

I believe that Donna self published that book.

I was interviewed for a book that was supposed to come out by Jamey

Lacey, and her title was going to be " Dying for Cleavage " (and a

subtitle about breast implants). I never saw this book become a

reality.

I would love to see snother book come out. However, I think that

story after story of our tragedy, while clinching the fact that we

have become ill from implants, would not be as marketable as a

gutwrenching book about women hurting in general from the pressures

put upon us by society to look " perfect " , and how the implants have

affected us all in very similar yet different degrees.

I am all for someone taking on this task! I know we've had writers

on this group, and I know at least one woman was inspired to start a

book based on some of the articles that have already come out that

didn't quite capture our suffering.

Let's do it!

You are so much smarter than I was over 3 years ago.

As Kathy eloquantly put it, none of us are unbiased, but most of us

know how you feel. We were there once, too! Hind sight is always

20/20.

Regardless of what you decide, implants are not the cure for

happiness and self-image issues. I was always concerned that my

breast were too flat, saggy and uneven. After surgery, the male

attention I got was unnerving. Men, including husbands of friends,

would stare at my chest instead of listening to what I had to say.

I started to feel paranoid about the clothing I wore. Did it cling

to my chest too much. Many of us have talked about the baggy

clothing we wore to hide the $4000 surgery we had!

I teach aerobics. Many of the instructors at the gym have had

implants. To my knowledge, many of them seem fine, now. The

problem is that most of the women I know have not had them in long

enough to start experiencing symptoms. It took me the better part

of 3 years to figure out what was wrong. I know 3 women presently

that have implants and are suffering from " wierd " symptoms: massive

hive outbreaks, rashes on legs, hair loss and loss of feeling in the

arms and neck. Two friends have decided not to get implants after

watching what all I have gone through and I am so thankful.

Looking back, it would have taken a lot to keep me from having them

put in. But nobody told me that I could suffer from a disease for

the rest of my life. I now have to be so careful about how I take

care of my body. The slightest imbalance sends my immune system

into orbit!

Please consider what we all have to say. Thanks for your prayers.

My new joke is.... Unless you want to pose for Playboy this year,

you don't really need them...........LOL

Kathy,

I have mentioned on this site that I'd like to write a book - and I

do plan on doing that. What I'd like to do is compile everyone's

stories (whoever is willing to provide their stories) and then self-

publish - because I've been trying to get a children's book

published and I'm seeing that it is pretty difficult for a first

time author to get anyone's attention. However, self-publishing is

a good alternative, especially for something that would be

deemed " controversial " .
