Guest guest
Vicky. Though slim, you can also inject in the " abdomen " . I am too. In fact even slim women do by nature have more bolster than slim men. Anyway you will have sufficient bolster to inject in ventrally as you have in the thighs. I use the ventral sites for normal insulin at meals and take my basic (mixed) prolongued acting insulin " at bedside " in the teighs, or preferably as far as I can reach, in the buttocks. Its a question of technique: Sit, bending a bit foreward and relax your " abdomen " . Injectable area is minimum 2 fingers away of the navel. Most convenient is the area just above navel level. How far out to the sides you can go is individually different. But you can use quite a lot of space and so vary the injection-sites. Ventrally you have the quickest subcutaneous absorbtion. With your thumb and pointing finger, you press them slightly together making a fold of the skin to inject into. You must try out, what's best for you: Needle length and injection-angle. I use an 8 mm needle, as is suitable in most people. Injecting at the outer area, I inject in an angle of 45 degrees. Ventrally up to 90 degrees. Its important to get into the " s-u-b-cutis " to have the best absorption and hardly any reflux of insulin. If you inject too superficially, you may not be able to benefit from the insulin properly due to " incapsulation " . Keep the needle in place after injection for around 10 sec., release you fingers from the skin-fold and retract the needle in a slightly different angle than when you injected (to avoid reflux of insulin). This technique is practicable in public places too, like in restaurants, as Collier describes. If you feel, you have to inject through your clothes, its OK, but only use the needle once then. Infections due to that are unlikely due to the antiseptics in the insulin. The restrooms of the restaurants, where I come (living in Germany) are v-e-r-y clean and neat. I have no reservations personally to go there to take my insulin, if I feel there is too little " privacy " , at the table. Washing hands before and after. I wait till the food is served, count my carbs, and take my shot - and then enjoy a good meal! If people get arrested for taking insulin shots in a restrooms, I don't know. I cannot rely on rumors. This must be in the USA, where reactions often are a bit peculiar and " hysterical " seen from here (: Ann Landers tread in NG misc.health.diabetes). You will manage well, I'm sure. Guest guest
Yesterday I asked a question about carb count of creme brulee and someone responded with a website that calculated carbs (and other things). You have to download the program and I'm completely computer-ignorant and don't know how to download. I kept that post, tho, and a computer-savvy friend is coming over Saturday and will show me how to do it. Unfortunately when I had my computer glitch a while ago the letter with the website information disappeared. Could someone email it here again before 10:30 a.m. (I'm on west coast, Portland, Oregon) Thanks, Vicki

Guest guest
This is for Vicki and her computer guru, from LM: << If you know the ingredients for this item, you can enter it into the food database at Dietwatch and it will calculate the calories, carbs, proteins, fats, etc., etc. for you. It is a terrific tool...I use it all the time. The Link: " http://dietwatch.com/ " - DietWatch The URL: www.dietwatch.com >>
