My son used to do this when he didn't have much

language. This was his way of protesting to something

he didn't like. He would just keep on " EEEEE " ing until

he got what he wanted. That sound used to aggravate us

a LOT hence he got immediate attention...:-)

As he progressed via biomed and his language skills

improved, the " EEEE " got replaced with appropriate

language.

I agree that for a non verbal child it should be

considered a mode of communication whereas for a

verbal child it would be more of a stim.
