Glad to see this posted. I know while implanted with McGhan/3M silicone gel breast implants I had experienced TSS twice. The second time I was put in the hospital. Women (of all ages) need to be more informed about TSS and breast implant exposure because they don't think Toxic Shock Syndrome could happen to them...well it may happen to them too when exposed to breast implants!TSS is NOT fun & can make you very, VERY sick. I also recall from my experience with toxic shock that I had a rash (on my thigh/legs) that was like a sunburn. It was a painful rash too.But I had not been in the sun to obtain the rash that was presenting like a sunburn. I vomited so much I simply wanted to die...lost about 15 pounds in several days. I was treated with doses of IV antibiotics...thank goodness I neverexperienced what

this poor girl went through with having to have her limbs removed. I was told my toxic shock was caught early. This type of harm (with breast implant exposure and TSS) could all be prevented IF someone (the medical community as a whole, FDA too, industry and plastic surgeons) were MORE FORTHCOMING aboutall breast implants....it is past time to uphold one's oath of First,do NO harm concerning all breast implants and they all need to NOW tell the truth of what the devices are really capable of doing to the human body. What suffering this young person did below did NOT have to happen...so why is NOT the medical community learning fromthis medical mistake below? How many more must suffer to note thatbreast implants and toxic shock syndrome IS A REAL PROBLEM? usedfor postmastectomy breast reconstruction. As in ourpatient, bacteria were cultured from both theperiprosthetic fluid and the SALINE WITHIN THEIMPLANT. The exact relationship between bacteriainoculation within or about an implant and the originof the infection remains a mystery. The ability of bacteria to traverse the membraneelastomer appears to hold the key to understandingthis pathologic process. The permeability of silicone(saline) implants to substances or organisms occurs bymeans of two proposed mechanisms. Either a substancecan diffuse directly though the membrane elastomer(as with ether, lidocaine, iodine, steroids, andcertain antibiotics) or it must leak though holes inthe membrane or fill ports.
