Hi, Adria, thanks for your response.

Believe it or not, I *DID* have her start taking iron last fall. She did take it (ferrous sulfate) UNTIL she went to that doctor, whom she thought was very strange, didn't listen, kept running out to answer the phone, etc. Out of all the comments that he made, that's the one she listened to: "why are you taking iron," so she stopped! :(

I'm trying to send her to healthcheckusa again since it's been about 8 months since she had blood testing done; we can see what her ferritin and all the rest are at now.

I'm sending some sea salt home with her, along with vitamin c and a b complex.

I know that antidepressants and birth control pills are not good for her but am not sure how that is affecting her.

Thanks again,

Re: help, please, for daughter

Well ,

I know others will chime in here, but if she were my daughter I would start her on a good iron supplement and then get her ferritin level rechecked in about 2-3 months. As I'm sure you know it should be between 70-90 for good thyroid usage.

Next, would be the adrenals, which you are addressing I see. I don't know that much about Delta (so I'll let or someone else address this); however, you might also have her support her adrenals with 1/4tsp natural salt in water or oj, morning and night, and taking as much Vitamin C has her bowels will tolerate. I understand that Vit B's are important too, so she may want to add a good B Complex.

Then you can begin to work her on the Thyroid support.

Good luck!

Hi, here are the Canary Club results for my 23-year-old daughter. I had her start on Delta (2.5 to start) as multi-dosing on Cortef would be a problem for her. Two days after she started the Delta, she started having the typical adrenal-type sleeping problems. She had been sleeping 10-11 hours a night.

I feel that her free t-3 is very low in the range. Blood tests last fall had her free t-3 right at mid-range, free t-4 at 1, ferritin at 48, antibodies very high in the range but still in range. High cholesterol, which she's always had, despite being tiny.

She has many hypothyroid symptoms. Depression is the worst and she's had suicidal thoughts again recently. I sent her to who was supposed to be an excellent thyroid doctor...he said her tests showed more HYPER! And why was I having her take iron supplements with a ferritin of 48! She's gained about 15 pounds in the past few months and seems to be a carb addict...

She had shown hyperthyroid both by blood tests and symptoms when she was about 7 years old and has floated up and down since then.

She's on Lexapro (has been on anti-depressants since age 16) and birth control pills (Apri). I don't understand the high testosterone, either.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated! Thyroid disease is rampant in our family...I've got Hashi's, as does our son...all the cousins on my dad's side of the family are either hyper- or hypo...

Well,

Here's food for thought and I learned this because of my 26 year old daughter. BC pills raise the chance of developing an hepatic adenoma. An adenoma is a vascular tumor....and in this case it grows on the liver. This is one of the "fine print" items that docs DON'T mention to young women. How much of a raise of chance? Well, w/o BC's a woman has about a 1 in 1,000,000 chance of developing one....with BC's it's about 3 in 10,000. Some may say "well it is worth it", but let me tell you a bit more....

An hepatic adenoma may burst without anyone even knowing it is there. 7% of those that have them, do burst spontaneously...and 3% of them DIE. The rest are hospitalized for a good length of time due to blood lose....need emergency surgery etc.

My daughter found hers because she develop appendicitis and had emergency surgery. They found the growth during an ultrasound and then took a picture while they were inside for surgery. She has since consulted with a Liver specialist at Dartmouth, and after extensive testing discovered it isn't an adenoma (which is good due to the bleeding component) but it is a rather large focal nodular hyperplasia (8cm). Because of it's placement (up by the diaphragm, next to the aorta and caudal vena cava and gallbladder), she has chosen to have surgery so that possible childbearing isn't compromised. This is a 4-5 hour surgery which will take place in July.

Why did this develop? They DO NOT KNOW. But I can tell you that she is both hypoT and has Adrenal Insufficency. Her doc is aware of these and knows she is on hydrocortisone and Armour. I will be there to ENSURE that she keeps getting her HC, altho she did say to me that he plans to make sure she has it. *I* will speak with him personally and, lol, have him address me as "Dr. Mom"!!

Sorry to get off on a tangent here, . I feel strongly about BC's now as you can see. If I can help it, our youngest will not EVER subject her body to them. BC's also interfere with thyroid hormones, btw.

Good luck with your young lady! Please keep us updated.

How scary, Adria! How's your daughter feeling now? This sure isn't anything

I'd ever heard of. I'll keep her in my thoughts and prayers for her surgery.

I know that bc pills interfere with thyroid hormones, as do antidepressants.

So much stuff going on. I was surprised at her high free testosterone, though!

She weaned herself rather abruptly off the antidepressants and had really bad

withdrawal problems. She's taking a very small dose as of last night, so I'm

keeping fingers crossed that it'll be enough to keep the worst symptoms at bay

and she can eventually get totally off them.

As for the bc pills, I don't know...I'll give her the information...

Thanks again,
