Please don't be scared. Instead, think about how positive it is

that

yu have found that your implants are making you sick and that you

can

get them removed and have a good chance of getting well again. Most

women who have their implants removed get substantially better. And

very few women regret their decision to explant. It isn't just

silicone implants that make women sick. This site is primarily

about

women sick from saline implants. They are also making women sick.

That is what I had. Saline implants have silicone shells and the

silicone can degrade and work its way into the body in tiny

fragments. Also, implants can have defective valves and organisms

can

travel back and forth. We have had several women who had

contaminated

implants--saline. One woman had black implants. Some women's

bodies

just react to the silicone shell by setting up an immunity

response.

There are many women here that have been in your shoes---their

husbands didn't want them to get the implants and they didn't know

how

to tell them that they thought they were making them sick. But it

worked out. We all make mistakes. Most of us were told that

salines

were perfectly safe and wouldnt have gotten them had we known

otherwise.

Where are you located? We have a list of surgeons that we

recommend . A few of these have explanted many women and definitely

do believe that implants cause illness. I know this is a scary time

and we have all been there. I had mine out four years ago and I am

so much better. I have my life back. So do many other women. We

will help you in any way we can.

Hugs, Kathy

My dear I feel your pain. I remember the scared feeling I had as I found out it was my saline implants making me so ill. The first thing you can do for yourself is to not panic. Now you know what is making you ill, you can focus on healing and your future. The sooner you get them out the better for you. However, it is important to get them out properly and safely. I suggest you look at our list of PS and call some and speak with someone in their office. As far as telling your husband, have him read our stories. I was scared myself to tell my hubby, because I met him with implants. I was afraid he wouldn't be attracted to me without them. But then again he had lost his first wife to her "toxic decisions". She was anorexic and an alcholic. I loved him too much to let him loose me also. I could almost feel my health clock ticking. I became more desparate to get them out then I was when I got

them. This is and will be one of the most difficult journeys you will have to walk. We are here for you sweet saline sister. I also am fairly new to this group. I'm a breast cancer survivor. My first set of implants 1989 were silicone and saline. The one's I have now are only saline. I have been sick since 1996 with chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia. This past Christmas I thought I had the flu with intense body aches. My left shoulder froze and then I started getting neck, shoulder and arm pains. Anyway it's a long story but another lady in this group kept sending me information. I contacted Dr. Kolb in Atlanta, Georgia. I had the tests run that she requested and yes one of them was positive. I either have a leak or a rupture because my bloodwork shows that I have mold/fungus. I have scheduled my surgery for May 3rd with Dr. Kolb. My husband isn't concerned about me being flat chested he just wants me to be well again. I live in Arizona so we are flying a long way but Dr. Kolb specializes in patients that are sick with implants so it will be worth it. I have a new baby grandson that I want to be able to pick up. I hope this helps you. The ladies in this support group are so knowledgeable and so understanding. Please feel free to ask any questions if I can help.

Blessings,

Penni

But please find comfort in knowing that this group is here for you.

I too would recommend looking thru the list of PS and start calling

them. I was explanted almost 2 months ago by DR Feng. It was quite

the journey getting there--not even talking about the actual 12 hour

drive. Without this support group I would not have been able to

make sure I was getting the proper care from a ps. I also have had

them here to vent to about my concerns. I too had a hard time

telling my hubby that I knew what is making me sick -- the implants

that he too never wanted me to get. It took lots of information on

my part to get him to see my side of things. Now he is a great

support and has even written back and forth with a few other

husbands/boyfriends to offer them support. So if I can help or he

can help we are here for you. Also I am still walking and working

and have my share of aches and pains, but pray that things continue

to improve for me. I feel lucky that I find the info on my implants

when I did instead of later.

Unfortunately, I did not see any for the state of Virginia. I'm sending you the whole list so you can look it over...you will have to travel, but hopefully you have family that can help in another state. Most of us have had to travel. You're only other option would be to start calling around and talking to each plastic surgeon in your area, making sure they know how to do a proper explant. It's a hard search sometimes. They will remove your implants "en bloc" and do a total capsulectomy, ifat all possible, which is a necessity for your eventual recovery. Checkwith the one you chose to be certain they are still doing removal this way,if at all possible. In rare cases, it might not be possible.2. They are skilled at obtaining preapproval from the various insurancecompanies for you and will fight if they have to. You need to read thearticle on "How to Obtain Insurance Preapproval for Explant," to help themas much as possible though; to receive a copy, post to me atSursiliimp@....3. They have a terrific reputation for producing good cosmetic resultswithout replacements. Often at least a modified breast-lift (mastopexy)will also be necessary, especially for those who have had children. If theplastic surgeon you have seen tells you will look deformed without salinereplacements, get out of his office because this simply is not true in thevast majority of the cases for those who have been implanted for cosmeticpurposes. For those who had implantation for reconstruction, rest assured, they will make the best of it for you by "gussing" things up so that scarsare less noticable and excess skin is removed, etc.4. They have a lot of experience in removal "en bloc." 95% of the plasticsurgeons cut open the capsule and tug and pull on the implant to remove itwhich they can rupture in the process creating a

silicone spill perhaps inyour tissue. The "en bloc" method entails removal by cutting around (thereis normally a plane between the breast tissue and the capsule/implant --like the body is rejecting it) capsule and removing it and the implant asone unit. This helps scoop up zillions of tiny, tiny silicone particles, hold any rupture together until out of you and helps prevents as I alreadyhave said, a silicone spill.5. If you are having Dow Corning implants removed or have opted out of theRevised Settlement (Baxter/Heyer Schulte to 3-31-84, Bristol/Surgitek and3M/McGhan to 8-2-84), they are conversant

in how to document any rupture in the operative report so it is, hopefully, acceptable for their settlement. This could result, by proper documentation, in up to an additional$25,000.00 from the Dow Corning proposed Settlement for you!6. If you have been unable to find proof of manufacturer, most of the p/s'on this list are very familiar with the breast implant identifierscontained in an article on how to nail down Proof of Manufacturer to beposted shortly at the<AHREF="http://www.geocities.com/HotSprings/8689/">SILICONE IMPLANTSURVIVORS</A>: http://www.geocities.com/HotSprings/8689/ Their descriptionof the identifers since they do everything possible to help women, could save you the expense, time and effort of having an expert identify your implants; a minimum cost of $300 plus FedExp charges to send your breastimplants. **The $3,000 explant benefit for those who are eligible for it from the Revised Settlement, can be assigned to the P/S. It is not paid, once the claim is submitted, for approximately 3 months afterwards. Your local support group members will, hopefully, know more on the details for those P/S' near you, if they will take Medicaid, a Letter of Protection or assignment of the explant benefit. Most P/S listed here will work withyou, if you have a documented rupture of silicone gel or another urgent medical problem caused by the implants such as an infection. Check with your support group leader for help, guidance

and support for working your way through explant! GMCLADY98@... wrote: Thanks ...where can I get the list of surgeons in Va ?

Tricia,

I have STRONG objections to Dr. Leighton's name being on this list. He was my doctor for 17 years. Never once would he admit that my health problems, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue and many others were implant related. In fact he mocked in front of my face and my husbands face that women that are explanted feel so much better especially if they do coffee enemas. I had my double lumen implants replaced by him in 2003. He also put in my original pair after my breast cancer surgery in 1989. In 2003 the implants that he put in were saline because he told us their was no silicone in them. I started having intense left breast contractures in December of 2004. I went to see him and he told me I would just have to live with the pain and gave me two straight jacket type tte binder bras. Last November I went in to see his assistant because I needed some new binder straps. Dr. Leighton hadn't been in the office since August because he had some sort of depression and couldn't work any longer and he was letting his office staff go. She also told me that he wouldn't go to a doctor for help with his depression. A few days later I received in the mail some notes from his office. I just quickly glanced over them as they were just progress reports. I just this past week pulled them out again to get the date of my last surgery. Low and behold although I didn't see them before the operating room notes were in their. He NEVER mentioned to me or my husband after the surgery and other visits that I had a gel leak.

I'm not the type of person to cut down someone else but I fully and completely trusted this doctor. He knew and could see how I have gotten sicker and sicker over the years and yet he never said anything!!!!

My understanding is that he came back to work in January. I haven't seen him or talked to him.

But I would not in any way shape or form recommend him to anyone. His workmanship is the best in Arizona but that is were it ends. He had plenty of chances to tell me I had a leak. The only thing he told my husband and me was that he didn't see any cancer. Period!!! He also made fun of me for crying because I was in so much pain the next day after surgery. His response was that I was depressed and that that was my problem and I had to deal with it.

He has a very fancy elegant office with large flat screened TV's in each exam room. He wears at least several thousand dollars suits on his days to see patients. He is very short and comes across as he can do anything and everything is a piece of cake.

Remember I have been very sick. Hundreds of thousands of dollars we have spend since 1996 on my illness. He knew this and yet he NEVER told me I had a gel leak.

If I had control of this list I would take his name off immediately!!!

Penni

Re: Does the pain go away ?

Unfortunately, I did not see any for the state of Virginia. I'm sending you the whole list so you can look it over...you will have to travel, but hopefully you have family that can help in another state. Most of us have had to travel. You're only other option would be to start calling around and talking to each plastic surgeon in your area, making sure they know how to do a proper explant. It's a hard search sometimes.

Comment from one of our ladies: "My explant doctor was Dr. Shujaat Khan ten years ago. . . I think he did a good job of explanting me. However, when I tried discussing the implant situation with him, he became very angry! At that time he was adament that breast implants don't cause health problems. The problem was the attorneys. . . .Also, his office did not inform me that my insurance would not cover my surgery until the day before the surgery. He was considerably more expensive and the surgical center he uses for explant really sticks it to you without telling you in advance what the charges will be.You may want to question him thoroughly."

Dr. Rohrich is Professor & Chairman of the Division of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgey at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. He has a clinical practice at Baylor University Medical Center & Zale Lipshy University Medical Center at Southwestern Medical Center.

Dr. Rohrich's Baylor Office is much more organized and easier to work with, than his Zale Lipshy Office. Dr. Rohrich 'knows' there are, indeed, problems with breast implants, and does not try to talk you into replacing implants. He was a significant researcher & inventor of the trilucent implants. He has a very impressive CV. He also has a wife, Dianne Gibby, a plastic surgeon in private practice at Medical City Dallas, and none of us would care to use her, for several reasons.

I must also tell you that Dr. Rohrich has been on retainer with Dow for several years now; which simply means you should be careful about information you report to him, and tests you have him run. I always had my PCP do all my blood work, and simply took lab copies to Dr. Rohrich, and Dr. Rohrich does not know that I know this.

My experience & outcome with Dr. Rohrich was great --- I just was not too comfortable finding out about his association with Dow, although it has never affected me!

(Make sure he will remove your implants "en bloc" and perform a total capsulectomy if possible)

Reasons for using one of our frequently suggested plastic surgeons even if you have to travel:1. They have a lot of experience in removal "en bloc." 95% of the plasticsurgeons cut open the capsule and tug and pull on the implant to remove itwhich they can rupture in the process creating a silicone spill perhaps inyour tissue. If you are having Dow Corning implants removed or have opted out of theRevised Settlement (Baxter/Heyer Schulte to 3-31-84, Bristol/Surgitek and3M/McGhan to 8-2-84), they are conversant in how to document any rupture in the operative report so it is, hopefully, acceptable for their settlement. Check with your support group leader for help, guidance and support for working your way through explant!

Thanks Penni, Relating experiences such as yours are valuable additions to our understanding of the doctors on our list. Talking about doctors has always been a difficult issue on our forum. We've had women leave over discussions of their doctor that turned negative. We encourage women to share their experiences, but always leave room for other opinions. I can appreciate your experience....I used Dr. Karl Hiatt in Mesa for my explant, and I can say that my experience was a good one, while others who have seen him for consult came back to tell us it was a waste of time and that he didn't think there was anything wrong with implants. Wow, what a shock to me after seeing another side of him that was all very good! I don't know if they change their tune or what, but the doctors are ALL seem to be very fickle when it comes to admitting whether or not implants are causing illness.

Sometimes they seem to stand with us, other times they seem to make fun of us. Sometimes they are neutral, but will do what we need. There are only one or two, possibly three, doctors that I can think of that we can count on completely to be on our side and do a proper explant. They are rare indeed. We are grateful for those individuals. But obviously, not everyone can go to these two or three doctors. For that reason, I think the list is there for recommending doctors who have a knowledge of the correct technique for explant. This means explanting en bloc, or understanding the need for a total capsulectomy, and/or the use of drains. It may not necessarily be a recommendation because we think the women will be treated with utmost respect or compassion and their illnesses understood...of course, it is what we HOPE for with ALL plastic surgeons, but

unfortunately don't always get. I am sorry you had a negative experience with him. I need to say that I did not compile this list....it was created by someone else, and we are only sharing what information has filtered down through the years. I think the best thing we can do is offer our experiences, keep looking for good plastic surgeons to add to the list, and add information where necessary. Thanks again for sharing....perhaps we should add a disclaimer of sorts, so please feel free to add a short commentary that would be helpful to others when viewing the list, and if you don't mind, could we use your email address for correspondence? two straight jacket type tte binder bras. I'm not the type of person to cut down someone else but I fully and completely trusted this

doctor. He wears at

least several thousand dollars suits on his days to see patients. WI 53226 (414)454-5440 http://www.mcw.edu/plastics/whoweare/bios/sanger.html (Make sure he will remove your implants "en bloc" and perform a total capsulectomy if possible) Reasons for using one of our frequently suggested plastic surgeons even if you have to travel:1.

Love cheap thrills? I didn't mean in any way to sound nasty. But I am working through my anger with this doctor.

I am thankful each day that I found a plastic surgeon who recognized the dangers of silicone and saline implants. She has stopped all implantations, except when she can give each patient the entire story and list ALL of the potential risk factors and thepatient requests them anyway due to extreme conditions such as mastectomy. She prefers mastopexy to implant for healthy women and openly discusses herreasoning.......she cares about the health ofher patients: by :Yannijazz@...

They have a lot of experience in removal "en bloc." 95% of the plasticsurgeons cut open the capsule and tug and pull on the implant to remove itwhich they can rupture in the process creating a silicone spill perhaps inyour tissue. Check with your support group leader for help, guidance and support for working your way through explant!

that my health problems, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue and many

others were implant related. In fact he mocked in front of my face

and my husbands face that women that are explanted feel so much

better especially if they do coffee enemas. I had my double lumen

implants replaced by him in 2003. He also put in my original pair

after my breast cancer surgery in 1989. In 2003 the implants that he

put in were saline because he told us their was no silicone in them.

I started having intense left breast contractures in December of

2004. I went to see him and he told me I would just have to live

with the pain and gave me two straight jacket type tte binder

bras. Last November I went in to see his assistant because I needed

some new binder straps. Dr. Leighton hadn't been in the office

since August because he had some sort of depression and couldn't work

any longer and he was letting his office staff go. She also told me

that he wouldn't go to a doctor for help with his depression. A few

days later I received in the mail some notes from his office. I just

quickly glanced over them as they were just progress reports. I just

this past week pulled them out again to get the date of my last

surgery. Low and behold although I didn't see them before the

operating room notes were in their. He NEVER mentioned to me or my

husband after the surgery and other visits that I had a gel leak.

His workmanship is the best in Arizona but that is were it ends. He

had plenty of chances to tell me I had a leak. The only thing he

told my husband and me was that he didn't see any cancer. Period!!!

He also made fun of me for crying because I was in so much pain the

next day after surgery. His response was that I was depressed and

that that was my problem and I had to deal with it.

> Comment from one of our ladies: " My explant doctor was Dr.

Shujaat Khan ten years ago. . . I think he did a good job of

explanting me. However, when I tried discussing the implant situation

with him, he became very angry! At that time he was adament that

breast implants don't cause health problems. The problem was the

attorneys. . . .Also, his office did not inform me that my insurance

would not cover my surgery until the day before the surgery. He was

considerably more expensive and the surgical center he uses for

explant really sticks it to you without telling you in advance what

the charges will be.You may want to question him thoroughly. "

I don't know of any in virginia. But I went to Dr. Feng in

Cleveland Ohio. I live in Il so I travelled about eight hours. I

wanted to go to someone who really did alot of explants. Many here

have gone to her, but we also have ladies who find their own. It

can be hard because many PS will not admit that implants cause

illness and actually try to dissuade you by saying that you will

look worse and be sorry if you get them out. But, like I stated

previously, the overwhelming majority of explanted women do not feel

that way. It makes me so sad that so many women are still getting

implants without all the facts. It can be tough to go through this

time when there are so many feelings--anger at being deceived, anger

at ourselves for being so foolish, anger and fear at being sick,

fear of the unknown, anxiety about where the money is coming from to

get the explant, decisions to be made, etc. But we have all been

through it too and are willing to help how we can.

Hugs, Kathy
