Guest guest
On Good Morning America this morning was a piece on a 12 year old girl who had liposuction to treat her obesity. The MD removed 35# of fat during the first surgery and 10# during the second surgery. There sat the well developed girl in her tight jersey and mini skirt. Mom and Dad were with her. Dad said she had " dieted since she was three and the weight just wouldn't come off. " When the parents were asked what was now being done with diet and exercise dad responded " she knows how to diet; she's been doing it since she was three, so we really don't have to keep an eye on her. " I didn't hear how long it had been since surgery.

Guest guest
The last question: What is the best part? She responds now she can shop at all the stores she has always wanted to.... Nothing about being able to move around more easily. She had to have lost some weight on her own. Her highest was 220#. The two surgeries combined remived 45#. Her current weight is 153#. I hope she adds some good exercise/activity to her weight management program. Jpress50@... wrote: Sounds like her parents need some counseling ! Jacquelyn A. Guest guest
I am sure you are right about the parents needing counseling. I have a some younger (11-13 YO) clients whose parents are so concerned about their child's weight, the child ends up being overweight or becoming eating disordered. The parents usually tell me that they are concerned that other kids are making fun of their child, which unfortunately is often true. I had a 26 year old professional woman last Friday whose mother had contacted me originally for her daughter's appointment. The client cried through the whole appointment and stated she didn't know why. We discussed her mom's concern over her weight. The client felt the mom was just concerned about her health. However, her weight had been a constant focus since childhood. The client has PCOS and the mom was the one who figured it out. Guest guest
it doesn't sound like she knows about healthy eating habit. People diet all the time, and when you start " dieting " at such young age you have disordered eating whether you like it or not. Especially as a child, you feel so deprived, so you go on/of a diet. Adding to this " soup " the loving society and media who call you " fatty " ............... I wonder how guilty the parents felt to allow their 12 yo to go under full anesthesia for lipo. She learned nothing from that other then " I can eat whatever and go back to Sx halleluiah, problem solved " ...LOL I assume rich people (each Sx is about $7-10,000?), have nothing better to do with their money? It is very twisted. All I want to know is why the poor girl was " eating herself to death " . My 2 cents. latest obesity tx On Good Morning America this morning was a piece on a 12 year old girl who had liposuction to treat her obesity. Guest guest
I just saw this on TV - the girl said she had HTN and early Type II DM (weighed 220 lbs.). It was just as upsetting (not sure if she is 13 now or not) is that she was prancing around in a bathing suit on the beach acting like she was 18+. Makes the concern re: health-related seem to pale in comparison to " beauty " . Check Nutrition at my site: Nutrition.teach-nology.com Ortiz, RD nrord@... Guest guest
, I watched that as I readied myself for work this morning and I was horrified! What an outrageous action for any physician to take. In good faith, this should not happen. The parents should be condemend for asking for it, and for allowing it. I need not say more. What nobody has touched upon is that lipo is not permanent. The fat cells will develop again, I'm sure. Guest guest
At a tertiary care facility I worked at, a surgeon performed a gastric bypass on a 14 year old girl. The night of her surgery her family brought her in pizza. Now where was the pre-op teaching, goal setting, and reality check? Not to mention that this child was not done growing...what are the long term ramifications of this? It all comes down to ethics and chasing a dollar. Cece Ohmart, R.D., L.D.
