Guest guest
Hi Kittie, Where are you? That makes a difference on the cost. In Denver with Dr. Huang it is about $5000 for everything, in Cleveland with Dr. Feng, it is between $6500 and $7000, and I am unsure about Dr. Kolb in Atlanta, but probably close to that. You can call and check. Insurance sometimes covers if you can get two doctors to put in writing that it is a medical necessity to remove the implants because: and here they put the reasons for a medical necessity, hardness (Baker 3 or 4 contracture), rupture, pain, etc. The doctors I have mentioned are pretty good about writing letters, and if you have a family doctor or another doctor who would write one, there is a possibility that insurance will cover it. Often insurance has a clause that says they will not cover any problems from cosmetic surgery. If you had breasts removed for medical reasons, then insurance pretty much has to cover this surgery. I am sure there are many women on this format who can give you more info. Guest guest
Kittie, Welcome to the group! Compared with getting implants, having them removed is USUALLY a piece of cake! . . . Nothing to be scared of. Just be sure you have a good doctor! Recovery (from the surgery) is often faster. If a doctor tells you that you will be deformed, run - to another doctor! Guest guest
Hi Kitty, I have not followed enough to know if you got a reply to your questions, so I wanted to share a few things. There is no reason to be afraid of explant surgery. For almost all women, the explant procedure is less painful than implantation. I didn't even have to take pain pills, and was up and about very quickly after removal. Cost can vary depending on your location and what you have done. Some women will require a mastopexy, or breast lift, upon explant to avoid excessive sagginess if they were saggy before implant, but that is optional. I would say explant can vary anywhere between $4000 and $15,000, so you will have to do some calling around. Of course, the most important consideration is if the surgeon will remove the implants properly. You must make sure of that--meaning total capsulectomy, or if you have silicone gel implants, en bloc removal. Insurance usually does not cover this surgery since it is cosmetic. However, there are exceptions. If you have severe capsular contracture to the degree of Baker III or Baker IV on the Baker scale, in many cases it will be covered. Mine was. Some of the women have been able to be reimbursed for the explant cost after analysis of their implants, in which contamination is found or other defects/complications contributing to sickness. I hope you are able to schedule explant soon! It's an investment in your future!
