Guest guest
Cherie,We did so much camping while I was sick. My husband is a very passionate hunter, so we do alot of outdoors stuff, and we've done alot of traveling since I got my implants out too. It is definitely a challenge to eat right when you are away from home! The healthy choices are so limited. While driving, we tend to do the cold sandwichs, such as Subway or Jersey Mike's, and load up on the veggies in the sandwiches. We get the whole wheat bread or sourdough,or order them as salads. In sit down restaurants, there may be more choices, but practically nothing will be organic. We avoid deep fried foods, and try to order mostly salads. We often take snacks in the car to munch on and try to avoid eating out if we can, but there are lots of times when we just want to indulge and we do. I just try to choose wisely when I can, focusing on the fresher foods rather than the cooked ones. I put togther a list of food items that I take for camping that I found to be very easy to manage and healthy too. I'll share some ideas with you. I am sure others will have lots of ideas to add, but here is what I've taken: For breakfasts: Oatmeal ( I do use the instant oatmeal, but I look for organic and buy only the flavors that don't have partially hydrogenated oils in them, and I add several heaping teaspoons of organic oat bran to each bowl. This keeps the blood sugar levels from spiking too much. You do have to add a little extra water to each bowl when you add in the extra bran, but it's definitely better for you that way.) Bananas Oranges Yogurt Homemade bran muffins Tea Lunches: Salmon salad sandwiches or on crackers ( I buy canned salmon to take, then bring along some relish and healthy-style mayonnaise that I mix up together. You can use Ezekial bread or organic crackers, or whatever gluten-free item you substitute. Or you can eat it on lettuce.) Bagged salads, my own salad dressing ( You can even add the dressing in the bag and shake! We do Caesar salad this way.) Canned chicken to add to salads Hummus Celery sticks, apples, organic peanut butter Watermelon, pineapple, other melons cut into chunks Grapes (we put into tupperware) Hard boiled eggs Dinners I usually pre-cook several items such as soups or stews and just heat them up over a camp stove top, or use the lunch ideas. I finally got to the point in the camping experience that I told my husband no more. I could not get enough deep sleep. We used air mattresses, but those were never comfortable enough for me because they would partially deflate and then I was always rolling over toward my husband and couldn't turn over or budge, or else I was half laying on the ground! I hated it. Getting a good night's sleep will make all the difference in the world, so look for anything to help you in that department. I just decided I'd had it! I need my sleep! I was so happy when we got our cabin. Cherie, I hope that you find this helpful. I always love hearing other's ideas for eating healthy, so I'll be watching for other suggestions too! Hugs, Patty >> I do so good with my healthy habits when I am home, but when it > comes to travel it's really hard.
