, Rest assured you have come to the right place for support. We have all

been thru that long agonizing wait. The long wait can be hell on wheels, but

somehow it always manages to arrive.

,

Congratulations! It's exciting to read that you have

your surgery date and yes I know the idea of surgery

is scary but the rewards are so great. I should

know...I've done it twice now. <grin>

I love Atlanta having raised my family there. I also

know right where Northside Hospital is so I can

visualize this event that's about to take place.

Try to relax and let the doctor do his job. Just

think, you should be hearing no later than mid June!

Meanwhile, best wishes for an easy and successful

surgery followed by a rapid recovery on your way to

sound.

,

Congratulations on making this great decision. I know surgery is

scary.. Many of us have been there. Just try and relax, ask any

questions you want and know that we are all here for you and eager to

follow your journey with you.

wishing you the very best for a successful surgery and a speedy

recovery. Keep us posted.

speaking of being scared, I ran across this quote last week and have

been using it quite a bit lately.. this seems a fitting time to

repeat it.

something else is more important than fear. "

I'll be having my left ear implanted because it's my (slightly) worse

ear and because I'm a south-paw and it will be nice to be able to write

while on the phone (and I WILL hear on the phone!). I'm getting the

Congratulations ! You've made your decisions and are comfortable

with them and that is important. And you also have a very good attitude

about doing well and talking on the phone! Looking ofrward to reading

your posts about surgery and hook-up.

Yes, that is a good quote. I saw it here last week and I could not

resist using the quote in the April SHHH Houston newsletter.

The courage to have a surgical procedure -one which can have serious, dire

effects, which are fortuneately very rare, but which the surgeon is

obligated to mention them to the patient, is a calculated risk. All of us

here have decided that our desire to hear better is more important and worth

taking that risk. I've been profoundly HOH for 56 years and have worn

hearing aids for 50 years so I finally lost patience and decided to do

something better, while I still have private medical insurance.

Due to budget cuts, it appears possible that in

the near future, Medicare will pay a smaller share of the cost of the

implant than they do now. As we all know, medical costs keep on rising.

Maybe 20 years down the road 'they' will have a marvelous new bionic device

even more wonderful than the CI which can be installed by nanotechnology or

microbots but by then I may be too old to care. :)

Surgery Date!

I can't believe I've actually committed myself to doing this, but I'm

scheduled for CI surgery on April 25 at 3:00 pm! It will be at

Northside Hospital (North metro Atlanta area), by Dr. Sanjay Bhansali.

I'll be having my left ear implanted because it's my (slightly) worse

ear and because I'm a south-paw and it will be nice to be able to write

while on the phone (and I WILL hear on the phone!). I'm getting the

Clarion implant; a hard choice to make, but for me it's the right one.

So I'm going to be needing lots of support--I'm getting nervous just

writing this! I'm so glad there is a group like this to help me on my

journey!

Hi

Just want to comment on what you wrote about the risks involved with surgery.I

had been hearing impaired for most of my life and was profoundly deaf for 10 yrs

before I received my implant. There was only a moment of hessitation after my Dr.

told me the risks..i wanted to hear so badly that I ready to take the risks...I

wish you the best with your surgery and hookup..I am a few yrs. older than you

but I was implanted when I was 58..the yrs since have been wonderful!!

Thanks to everyone for your good wishes! I'm not really nervous about

the surgery itself, but rather how I'm going to feel for awhile

afterwards. I keep imagining the effects of someone using a jack hammer

on my head LOL!

Silly, I love the Ambrose Redmoon quote. I saved a copy of it the

first time I saw you post it!

M., I did use your research and the cicentral web site (and many

other sources as well) in making my implant choice. Thank you for

sharing your research with me. In the end, it came down to technology

vs battery life and market share. Since my career has been in

computers, technology was the deciding factor. I really do believe that

there is no wrong implant choice, but still a choice must be made.

Debbie, you're lucky you got to tour the AB facilities. Sounds like

quite a few people make these tours. If I ever get out that way I'll

have to arrange for one.

Subject: Autosensitivity

Hi :

When I was a single CI user, the autosensitivity feature helped me thru many

many difficult listening environments. I used in quite often. In 2003 I

became bilateral, so I benefit from what is called the " head shadow

effect " , thus the use of autosensitivity was much less. However, I still

do use it from time to time, depending on the situation.

In a nutshell, YES it DOES make that much of a difference. I have been a CI

recipient for 13 years. What I like best about the system I have is the

huge number of options available to me to adjust my processor for any given

situation. I just happen to be a person who always strives to find the best

listening spot, whether it was my HA or my CI. Prior to receiving my

implant I went to HLAA conventions and met people with all the brands and

had the opportunity to observe for myself how they functioned in the real

world. One of my observations was that in general, I felt those who used

the Nucleus implant systems did better in noise. Again, that was just my

own personal observation and it was with MANY different people.

I think all of this is very individual and what works for one person, may

not be another's cup of tea. That said, I know many people who use the

Nucleus system who tell me that they never adjust their settings. Also, in

today's world, I would venture a guess that thanks to competiton, the

implants all work well and it is just a matter of choosing the feature that

are important to YOU. Just do your homework. Talk to people who use them,

observe them if you can and make your own judgement.

FWIW - Hope this helps.

Hello everyone,

Do you any of you ci wearers use the Autosensitivity level when placed in an

area with alot of background noise? And if you do, how much of a difference

did it make? And does it really make THAT much of a difference?

Tried it several times and wasn't quite sure of the extent it made a

difference? I tend to stick to the same level, even when knowing in advance

I might be placed in an environment whereas there might be alot of noise.

Thanks!
