Hi Something fishy about negative study on omega 3

If you don't believe in conspiracies then ignore this article. What you do need to know is that sales of Omega 3 for Heart protection have grown massively over the last year. At the same time stories concerning the negative effects of Statins have been on the increase. Statins are the third largest drug in the world after Chemotherapy and Pain killers with worldwide sales of £10 billion.

Firstly a few weeks ago we saw the press and television coverage of the "New" discovery" that large doses of Statins could not only reduce Artery clogging or but could reverse the problem. And then, surprise, surprise a report lands on the desks of leading journalists which claimed eating oily fish did not cut the risk of heart disease or cancer.

Well read on???. The plot thickens.

A LEADING nutritionalist has hit back at a study

Holford, the founder of the Institute for Optimum Nutrition, who has been asked by the government, parliament and the Food Standards Agency to give expert advice on healthy eating in the past, said he felt there was "something very fishy going on".

He pointed out that the paper, which was published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ), creating headlines across the world, was a review of 15 other studies, most of which had found omega 3 oils, were good for you.

"Of these studies, nine shows the benefit of omega 3, three show no effect and two are shown as slightly negative,"

Also we understand that the author of the 'negative' study has questioned how his study could be used to turn this review paper from positive to negative.

Margarine!!!!!

Why would he do this? One very simple reason, if you read the abstract of this paper, the first thing you'll find is that this isn't a study on fish or fish oils; it's a study on margarine."

This negative study involved giving people a margarine containing omega 3 oils from flax or omega 6 oils.

"Later in the [bMJ] paper, the authors do analyse all the studies using fish-derived sources of omega 3.

"However, combined, in the way this review analyses the data, this seemingly obvious beneficial effect doesn't come up as significant."

The report landed on the desks of journalists just as omega 3 is growing in popularity as a complementary option to a cardiovascular drugs whose market worth more than £10 billion worldwide.Just Last WeekLast week pharmaceutical drug sales topped $600 million. The number one best seller was Lipitor, a statin drug for lowering cholesterol. It brought in $12.9 million. Next is Plavix, for thinning the blood ($5.9 million), closely followed by Zocor, the worlds's first over the counter statin ($5.3 million). Next is Norvasc, for high blood pressure ($5 million). The natural alternatives for this pharmaceutical goldmine are omega 3s, B vitamins for lowering homocysteine, niacin specifically for lowering cholesterol, magnesium for lowering blood pressure and all the vital lifestyle changes such as exercise.

Could it be that our friends in the Pharmaceutical industry are becoming scared of the growing influence of natural complementary options? We know we have a number of eminent Doctors and Professors amongst our email clientèle and we would appreciate your feedback. It is not our intention to denigrate Statins per se, but we do wonder if these drugs are being oversold. Visit our new Omega 3 Section
