Guest guest
Christene . . . Not everyone is sensitive to silicone - I'm very concerned that those of us who have had breast implants aren't going to be able to tolerate other life, or function, saving implants as we age. Why nobody is studying this issue, I can't imagine . . .. Everything seems to be about the " Now " without making allowances for the future. I know that I'm going to need cataract surgery at some time . . . The lens they usually use is silicone . . . there are others, but I doubt that they test anyone to see if they are sensitive to those materials . . . And, even if you aren't initially, what if you become sensitive over time? IMHO, the contraceptive device is probably safe for most women. (It was called a diaphragm years ago) . . .. However, I think it would be best to put it in when it's needed and not wear it all the time. Hugs, Rogene
Guest guest
But Rogene....While I hear what you're saying I just feel like by having the FDA yet again "endorse" another silicone product it's just another reason for them as a whole to put the silicone issue on the back burner all together. And I also just have to say that I'm surprised....I realize that not every one has a sensitivity to silicone. Nonetheless, the problem exists and continues to grow and manifest itself in many different ways. Guest guest
Christene, I understand, I really do . . . The experience we've been through makes us skeptical of everything and everybody related to the medical professions! . . . I fight those feelings every time I see a doctor! Yet I know that there are aspects of modern medicine that save life - and quality of life - for millions every day. I'm not happy with a diaphragm being made of silicone .. . . but then, when you figure an IUD may be silicone, that birth control pills are messing with ones hormones, condoms are usually latex, watching the calender is risky, and morning after pills aren't acceptable to most, what's left? Having a bunch of kids when one can't afford to raise them? Not a good option either! I'm all for keeping the pressure on for truly safe options . . . But I'm afraid that, for the time being, we have to make a personal decision about which method carries the least risk. At least with a diaphragm or condom, it can be removed when not in use . . . You can't say that for an IUD or birth control pills. Hugs, Rogene
Guest guest
I guess I just think this way because I've already been witness to so many births to parents that most probably should not have been parents, but then had she used a silicone diaphragm, would she of ever been able to have a child? It's a double-edged sword for us.....but even aside of the child birth issue itself, the fact remains that FDA continues to put such a harmful substance in the paths of women. It's like they are saying silicone is safe all the way around. Think of it like this..."Geez, if silicone is safe to place up against my cervix then silicone must be safe to be used for breast implants....because otherwise the FDA wouldn't have approved it for use." And quite honestly, until my own experience with silicone, that's exactly what I would have thought. But I guess in my mind, the bottom line is... Plastic surgery is okay, it's putting these devices (including collagen) in our bodies that isn't okay. These are things that are not meant to be there. We could argue the same point with antibiotics, and all meds, but at least with those they are filtered out and excreted from our bodies after doing the necessary job....I guess I just think differently than everyone else. But I carry with me the frustrations of all of these ladies and I just wish there was a way that I could take it all away. I want to take your cancer away from you Rogene, I want 's pain, I want Lea's frustration, I want Sis's pain of losing her marriage, I want everybody's financial worries of how they are going to pay for the removal, I want to take all of this from everybody, but I can't and that just kills me on the inside. But what I can do is open my big fat trap and help spread the word and hope that nobody else has to experience any this. So really I guess I'm just bitter, and to see the celebration of more silicone put on the marketfor unsuspecting women to use makes me ill. I know there is various methods of birth control, each with it's own risks, but then it's all about abstinence! Guest guest
Thanks Michele . . . Lemon as a contraceptive is new to me - now that I don't need it! . . . I wish everyone knew about this! . . . Guest guest
Lea and Christene . . . I hope I haven't upset either of you . . . I certainly wouldn't want to! . . . I'm thrilled to hear of all the safe options that are becoming available! . . . A doctor at the NIH told me that, only a handful of the chemicals being used are tested on people . . . fewer on children, and almost none in combination with other chemicals. He said that the illnesses our grandparents suffered from have been pretty much brought under control by medicine (there is some debate there, I know), but that they haven't begun to get a handle on what these thousands of chemicals are doing to us! The problem is so big, there's hardly a place to start - except finding ways to eliminate as many chemicals as possible from our lives. Guest guest
Dear Christene, You're right . . . you can't make things right for everyone . . . Please don't feel that you need to! . . .. When you feel that need, just say a prayer for that person, and trust that God will do the rest! As I see it, we're on life's journey to learn . . . We have different experiences so we have opportunities to learn. . . I'm so glad for everyone in this group! I've learned so much from all of you! Guest guest
Gosh Michele, I certainly wasn't offended. We must all keep in mind that our differences in opinions, thoughts, ideas, and feelings are exactly what we learn from. So it is up to each of us to embrace those differences. We learn not from failure alone. We also learn from each others triumphs! So please don't be afraid to share...for all we know, YOU could have the answer for whatever the question is. I applaud you for asserting yourself and your beliefs! Christene
