Guest guest
It depends on what you are wanting to accomplish. I would not let the plastic surgeon take possession of the implants at all. They could very conveniently lose them or destroy them or whatever they want to do with them. Most plastic surgeons will assume that you don't want the implants, so if you intend to take possession of them, be sure they know. If you do take possession of them, make sure they are properly packaged to prevent contamination. Ask for this. If you are going to have your implants analyzed by Dr. Pierre Blais, he has instructions on how to package and send them. Those instructions can be found in our files. You can have your implants analyzed for several reasons. Many women want to know what organisms might be contaminating their implants in order to know how to be treated medically. This is a pretty good idea if you want to have a specific and directed course of treatment. That is why you must make sure your implants are not packaged sterile. It will kill everything off. You also may want to have your implants analyzed for legal reasons. Dr. Blais can determine what model your implants are, if they are defective and other reasons that may be deemed admissable in court. Going to court is a very stressful undertaking though, and most women choose not to do that. Chances of winning are usually small. A class action lawsuit against salines has been tossed about, but so far, there is no indication that it is going anywhere. Salines were in fact included in the Dow lawsuit for women who were implanted before June 1993. For those of us implanted after that date, we most likely signed an affidavit upon being implanted that said we took full responsibility for anything that happened because of our implants because the surgery was considered "experimental." I know of no other place to mail implants, and know of no other expert on failed medical devices that has undertaken this kind of analysis. At least, no one that we can trust. I am sure manufacturer's would like to have their failed implants back because once they have possession of them, we have no evidence.
