In the months that followed, I began reading a lot about this 800 lb gorilla disease (Susie!), and I saw a lot of references to injecting in the abdominal area. The modern knowledge is that injecting in the abdominal area gives the fastest absorption, and to a lesser extent, more complete absorption of the insulin. I inject almost exclusively in the abdominal area now. There is very little bruising, and is usually completely painless, although the newest 30 gauge (super-fine) and very short needles on my pen-syringes help with that, I'm sure.
