If using a commercial preparation, be sure to avoid products that contain any of the following - benzophenone-3 (Bp-3), homosalate (HMS), 4 methyl-benzylidene (4-MBC), octyl-methoxycinnamate (OMC) and octyl- dimethyl1-PABA (OD-PABA). These agents are said to act like the hormone estrogen by increasing the growth of breast cancer cells. To find a natural sun screen, try a good health food store. > > > > Ethel > > > >
Guest guest
I really think that sunscreens are dangerous....because of the chemicals they contain. I myself do not use sunscreens at all, and I've tried to help my family understand why we shouldn't use them. Dr. Mercola has a webpage that discusses the dangers of sunscreens and offers suggestions for sunblocks instead. http://www.mercola.com/2003/jul/2/sunblock_cancer.htm http://www.mercola.com/2000/oct/15/sunscreen.htm This month's issue of National Geographic provides clues as to why these sunscreens are dangerous. (June 2006) If anyone is interested, it's in the article on Nanotechnology. The culprit is nanoscale particles of TITANIUM DIOXIDE. The article states that depending on the way they are nanosized, they can produce high amounts of free radicals when exposed to sunlight. Free radicals can damage cells, making some more likely to turn cancerous. A good rule to live by is this: Only put on your skin what you would put it in your mouth. (Your body will be affected by it either way.)
