Guest guest
Hi Tiff, do you have care at home Medicaid for your son? That doesn't go by income it's for long term care for children. Do you have a case manager that helps you with all the insurance questions? I don't know about Suffolk County, but in Nassau we have 3 major agencies: St.'s,St. Ottile and Renaissance. Do you use any of those? They help you get the benefits from the Becket fund....as far as I know.....What school does your son go to? hope that helped a bit ,I can find out more for you if you need. Guest guest
hi lee, yes we looked into care at home, we were not eligable because our private insurance paid for the 24 hr nursing care. were not eligable for medicad either. believe me, i have exhausted myself looking into ways to help defer the cost. it has gotten better over the yrs, but its hard to overcome what hole were in. frankie now attends st. charles, but he's graduating in june, he will to thru the summer but in sept. he will be going to forest brook, in st. james, i think. its right near me. thanks for the info. tif
Guest guest
Tiffi-- There is a disability medicaid that is different from just plain old medicaid. This one is based on the disabilities that your child has. From what I understand there is a certain amount of income that you can have and anything over that you would basically pay to the state to bring your income down to that amount. It left us with a large spend down but there were several deductions that our case manager took to get that spend down lower and more resonable. (The first person that I talked to did not know about the deductions) So we will pay the spend down amount and medicaid will cover the rest. You can open and close it depending on what your medical bills are each month. At first I didn't think it would be worth it to do this because our spend down seemed so high, but for the few weeks Josh was in the hospital I think it will defenantly be worth it. Guest guest
Tiffi- We are in a similar situation, I think. My husband has good insurance thru his employer. But for the copays and deductibles (and if Aubrie ever goes beyond the lifetime max on insurance), we are enrolled with the Division of Specialized Care for Children. This is the Dept of Special Health Care Needs that Jeanne mentioned. I don't know what it would be called in NY. There is an income requirement, but we were able to make it just under the wire. There are many exemptions, so you can't just go by your taxable income. It would probably be worth it to go thru the application process even if you think you won't qualify. It doesn't cover all of Aubrie's medical conditions, but it covers most. And it covers hearing aides, glasses, etc. We didn't qualify for the Beckett Waiver -- I can't remember what the qualifications are here. I think it involved more severe medical needs than Aubrie has. Good luck!! Michele mom to Aubrie (17 mos) CHaRgE and (7yrs), wife to DJ, in IL westml@... Guest guest
Michele - I agree with retrying for MA. We didn't qualify financially either, but did medically. The thought that they look at here in Georgia is " could this child qualify for nursing home status? " For example, because of 's medical conditions, it was determined that she should could get daily care here at home, or permanently at an institution (nursing home type care.) Aubrie's vision and hearing would qualify her alone here. Talk to your pediatrician about it too - they seem to have some creative wording skills that may sway the MA board. Good luck! Guest guest
Jeanne- Thanks for the MA info. I will take a look at it again to be sure. I think part of it was our income and assets. Guest guest
Amy- I don't know if Aubrie would qualify or not. Her vision impairment is not too bad. Good vision in one eye and extremely poor in the other. Her hearing may be fine, or may be in the mild to moderate range. Her health is good now. So I don't think she'd qualify based on the institutional care v. home care idea. She has gotten nursing care from our Dept of Rehab Services based on this idea. But she's due for her annual review this month and I really don't think she'll qualify again. We'll see how that goes and I'll have to look into our state's qualifications for MA again. Guest guest
Donna, One thing you really don't want to do is wait more than 30 days after your Cobra expires. Then you'll have a heck of a time getting insured. I would start by doing a google search for Healthcare Companies in GA, and your City. Other than this, I'd call your Insurance Commissioner, they can help you in finding a new Insurance Co. that will meet your needs. I just found out yesterday that my cobra insurance is ending in Oct. Guest guest
You're welcome Donna. I don't know if other States have started this yet. But here in Oklahoma we have a new healthcare insurance program that the premiums are based on your income. Would be nice if you have something like this there. Your Insurance Commissioner would be able to tell you if you do. ~Tommie~ www.myspace.com/tommiejj PH, CFS, FMS, Diabetes, Sleep Apnea, Restless Leg Syndrome Don't waste energy second-guessing what you're missing or what can go awry. Guest guest
Thanks Donnie. I am on Cymbalta for the mild depression. It works. I only take it twice a day. It's the only one that works. I tried Neoroton. It worked for awhile. But it stopped. And at the time, the state wasn't paying for the Cymbalta. My doctor gave me a couple of months of free samples of Cymbalta. I only get mild depression, when I am in pain, and having the spasms. Because I can't do anything at all. But be in bed. Which I hate. It really does take over your life, though. I DO have a social life, and I have the most awesome friends EVER. They are so understanding when I have to cancel at the last miniute because of pain and spasms. Speaking of which, I am going to go and rest. 'Cause if I don't rest and overdo it, the spasms will get bad and so will the pain. Thanks again, Donnie. Guest guest
http://www1.dshs.wa.gov/ though this is WA site. What state do you live in? Here is info on SSI: http://www.ssa.gov/ I hope this helps. There is no name yet to my chronic pain. I just call it moderate to severe chornic pain. I have it in my hips, thighs, legs, feet, and ankles. I also have BAD edma. (swelling) My feet goes numb if I stand for 2 minutes or more My feet burn really bad if I am out and about, like shopping and doing a lot of walking for like 2 or 4 hours. I also have spasms attacks. Really bad ones to the point, I can't hold anything in my hands, and I can't walk up or down the stairs. I also have anxiety. And mild depression. I am on like 9 prescriptions. I hate it. Some days, I am fine, and can walk up and down the stairs, or even shop or hang out with friends all day, or walk across the street just fine. But sometimes, I have really bad days, to the point where I can't even walk up or down stairs. Or can't even get outside at all. I walk SOOO SLOW. I've been doing stretching, and that is helping, with my legs not being stiff every morning. I am also exhausted all the time. Because I have troubles sleeping at night. I try not to sleep during the day but I always lose that battle. I have to rest before I do ANYTHING for at least an hour or 2. If I don't, it will be a bad day. Anyway, let me know if info has helped you or not with DSHS and SSI. I hope you are doing well. Guest guest
Hi Carolyn, Thanks for responding. I actually have gotten a few ideas. 1. Conversion, I guess that is where the cobra I am on now goes from being under the hospital where I worked to being just an independent cobra policy from the state, but the hospital I worked at doesn't have this kind of program. So 2. is a program with the state that I got a 1-800 number from an insurance agent that I talked to today. She told me to wait to closer to the time cobra is going to expire and then notify them to get a packet. But I appreciate you wanting to help :-) Donna To: Hugs-N-Pain From: mcelwolf@... Guest guest
Hi , Thanks for responding. Wow Im so sorry that you're having all these troubles at such a young age. I am a little bit older, I'm 47. I have actually been fighting with back problems for the past 20 years. But, they hadn't gotten really bad until 2 years ago and I had to give up my job as a labor and delivery nurse, which I loved. I feel totally lost now without doing it. Anyway, Yes I have applied for SSI. I've been turned down once and now am working on an appeal. I don't know what DSHS is???? Donna To: Hugs-N-Pain From: shanners29@...
