I was awarded total disability in 1996 related to my ruptured implants. I was director of oncology when my 10 year-old Hyer Schulte implants failed.Polydimethylsiloxane was found via infrared spectra by two independent LabsYesterday, my mother and I stood and watched Newt address the National Arthritis Foundation on the lawn of the Capitol. As I watched the crowd, I noted they and their disease was viewed as "credible". I turned to my mother and said, "Maybe joining with THEIR organization would make US more believable or maybe joining the Scleroderma Society or the Lupus Foundation, or the National Sjogren's Syndrome Association but where do I go to pay my dues to the Breast Implant Society?The fact is-----We the women have paid our dues and our payment has been with our health and in some cases with our lives! How much MORE must we pay?We have begged, pleaded, yelled, cried for you to hear our voices. All we received was a label of being "hysterical females" or having our social backgrounds viewed in the previous so-called, "Nuts and Sluts Study".If I had walked in here with a white cane and dark glasses would you have felt pity for me? If I had a cast on my arm or leg would you then acknowledge that I had been injured. If I was in a wheel-chair,like so many of the these women here today, would you finally see my disability?I, like so many others, have been told, "You look too good to be so sick!" I want to point out when you attend a funeral - how many times have you heard the comment, "Well, don't they look good!" The fact is,THESE PEOPLE ARE DEAD.!The fact is....our pain, and diseases in most cases, is internal - so, how do we show you our "suffering"? The fact is.....We have suffered with a chronic invisible illness------one of "cover-up" and corporate greed.We the women of this nation have been demoralized, shunned, abused and lied too. We have been denied proper medical treatment in many cases just because we noted on the health history that we had breast implants.It is beyond time that "WE" the women hold "ALL" parties accountable!At 2:00 p.m. yesterday afternoon, a "Class-Action" against the FDA and The American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons was filed in the United States District Court of Columbia.The subject matter of this action is the necessity to see that the FDA carries out its prescribed role to keep "UNSAFE" medical devices from entering the market. Furthermore, the plaintiff's have, and women in the future, will continue to suffer legal wrong if the individual members of ASPRS continue to perform breast implant procedures, which yet have received a ruling on premarket approval applications, and cause thousands of documented injuries each year.Our organization, Toxic Discovery Network, Inc., felt the time had come that we place the attention back on the sick women and children. It is time that the nation wakes up to the fact that they have been lied to about this injustice.My co-founder, Sandy L. McDougal of Champaign, Illinois could not be here with me today. She sends the following statement: "It has been over ten years since breast implants were a class III device and six years since the moratorium on silicone breast implants. The government has retained for years definitive findings that breast implants are defective devices. It is apparent to the injured victims that the FDA continues to protect corporations instead of consumers. The American Association of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons are as responsible for this travesty as their corporate and governmental allies. For a surgeon to fail to inform patients of known risks associated with breast implant procedures and to continue to implant known defective devices breaks all moral and ethical codes required for being a medical professional."The women and children of the world should no longer "Suffer In Silence" over the greed of the manufacturers and the cover-up's associated with it.This issue has never been about WEALTH for at least the women, this issue is about HEALTH!
