Guest guest
Disease expert wins $15,000 The Hamilton Spectator Ontario, Canada (Nov 29, 2006) http://www.hamiltonspectator.com/NASApp/cs/ContentServer? pagename=hamilton/Layout/Article_Type1 & c=Article & cid=1164754219674 & ca ll_pageid=1020420665036 & col=1014656511815 A Hamilton infectious disease expert's strategy to stop the overuse of antibiotics from breeding " super bugs " has won a $15,000 award for Hamilton Health Services. The strategy, designed by Dr. to reduce antibiotic overuse in Hamilton General Hospital's intensive care unit, earned the 2006 Canadian Healthcare Excellence in Quality Award. " In the ICU, it's sometimes very difficult to tell whether patients have an infection or not, " said . Most patients in ICUs receive some antibiotics. Overuse gives rise to antibiotic-resistant bugs and fungal infections in patients. Under the protocol, very sick patients are still aggressively treated, but those who don't respond to the drugs, or aren't so ill, receive minimal antibiotics. Since the launch of the protocol in February 2005, antibiotic use in Hamilton General's ICU dropped 41 per cent, saving roughly $223,000. Fungal infections have declined dramatically and fewer patients have had to be isolated with drug-resistant infections.
