Guest guest
I've been wondering, if you have vinyl bathroom flooring, how can you tell if the wax seal around the toliet is leaking? It seems like it would be hard to detect, since it might be leaking underneath the vinyl. (Also, isn't there a better way to fix around the toliet so that one could readily tell when the seal is broken?) Zippy
Guest guest
if your tolit seal is leaking you might notice a smell comeing from the sewer.if the stool moves or rocks and isn't level your seal is probably not good either. yes a leak might not be noticeable till the floor starts rottening. good just to replace the seal every so often along with replaceing flusher system in the tank.and check the stool for cracks.if new flooring is put down and stool sets on top of the new flooring i think you will need a new seal, and maybe a thicker one.its best to just butt the flooring up to the stool and cut around it.in new bathrooms the highth of the sewer rim takes into account of the flooring and the seal. sometimes vinylflooring will discolor where theres constant leaking. > > I've been wondering, if you have > vinyl bathroom flooring, how can > you tell if the wax seal around > the toliet is leaking? Guest guest
Quite often, builders or homeowners give a nice finished look to a toilet by putting caulk or putty around the base. This isn't necessary, and can help hide problems. If there is no such caulk, or at least if a gap is left on the back part of the toilet, when a leak in the wax seal finally occurs, water will be seen on the floor, or there may be a foul toilet odor in the bathroom. You will know very early that a problem exists, hopefully before major damage or mold infestation occurs. By the way, properly laid vinyl flooring should go under the toilet plumbing connection (wax ring or plastic). It should make water come out onto the floor around the toilet before getting into the sub-floor Toliet leaks ? How do you tell? Guest guest
Thank you for the replies so far. I don't have any caulking, so maybe I am OK. This is something I may want to look more closely at though in the future. Leaving a gap at the back sounds like it might be a good idea. Thank you again, Zippy ============================================================== > > Quite often, builders or homeowners give a nice finished look to a toilet by > putting caulk or putty around the base.
