How do you keep these things free of mold?

I ask this question because I have just discovered that my husband

put the old garbage disposal back into the kitchen that we totally

remodeled - new sink, cabinets, etc. Personally, it seems entirely

illogical to do something like that (it's the original disposal in a

22 year old house), which is why it never dawned on me to ask about

it or to look closely at the thing. I ferreted this out tonite as I

was getting a persistent, base of the skull, on the lower left,

pressure/pain everytime I was in front of the kitchen sink over the

past few days.

So, I will be getting a new disposal put in, but it does make me

wonder how I'm going to keep this one from getting moldy. Should I

just do without one altogether?

---who hopes one day to be in an entirely mold free home, but whose

finding it difficult when her spouse just doesn't get the concept

that mold makes me and our kids sick (of course that's probably

because he's sick too and not taking CSM)---

Any drain will grow mold, whether there is a disposal or not. Mold grows

on virtually any organic deposit, whether it is food residue or soap scum.

With a disposal, cleanliness really helps. Running enough water to get

everything to go down is essential. Even then, some food residue remains.

Turning the disposal on and throwing several ice cubes in can help break

loose those residual particles. And last, as with any drain, pouring in a

little Clorox diluted into a pint of water can minimize the mold problem.

I had the same problem in one of my many moldy houses, just take it

out-that was my solution-having to clean and decontaminate everything

continually in my life has left me lothe to have one more item to

worry about

I don;t know if this is related but I noticed in several apartments I

had if I didn't use the dishwasher on a regular basis that mold would

get in the sink drain. One time I even took apart the pipes

underneath to check it out. So I would run the dishwasher once in a

while and pour vinegar in there after doing the dishes. I even

would even use clorox once in a while even though I have trouble with

it. But of course if it is an old disposal I am not sure if mold

would be in there that you can't get to.
