Southwest Florida sees its first lieutenant governor take office

with Jeff Kottkamp of Cape Coral winning the post alongside

Republican Gov. Charlie Crist.

Kottkamp, 46, was elected to his first office when he won the Cape

Coral House seat in 2000. An attorney, he chaired the House

Judiciary committee.

Had he not joined Crist's campaign, House members said he was slated

for a top-level position on House Speaker Marco Rubio's leadership

team for the next two years.

Now Kottkamp is expected to be lobbying the same members he worked

alongside, helping push Crist's agenda through the Legislature.

He's had plenty of training.

Kottkamp worked for years for the lin law firm in

Fort Myers, where he often defended businesses against lawsuits.

But in 2005, he made headlines when he switched to the &

law firm and began suing the companies he once represented.

A staunch conservative and party leader in the House, he then made

news when he bucked party lines and voted against efforts -- which

were eventually successful -- to reform the way plaintiff's lawsuits

are handled, a key legislative goal of Gov. Jeb Bush and the GOP

leadership.

In 2003, Kottkamp narrowly escaped death after heart surgery. He was

in an induced coma for three months so he could undergo daily

surgeries to scrape mold from his chest cavity -- mold believed to

have been picked up during his surgery.

During that time, Cyndie Kottkamp was pregnant after years of hoping

for a baby.

Son was born while his father was still recovering.

When he signed on as Crist's running mate, Kottkamp said his doctors

gave him a clean bill of health.

dang,I shouldn't of read this one.even a simple sergery such as

removeing cataracts envolves risk of infection, higher risk when you

have reacureing infections in your body.makes it even scaryer when

you go the the eye doctor and the building causes mcs effects.whats a

person to do.if you can't get someone that understands that you need

a tottally clean environment before,during and after sergery.I wan't

to see again, not lose my eyes.and for some reason the eye doc's i've

been to so far have been overly rude when i try to address this

issue.
