Guest guest
Thank you. I just feel like this is something we need to do. My son is stimming even more now than when he started preschool. He too seemed less autistic back then. His EI therapists were surprised at his dx. I keep looking back and wondering where things changed. The more therapy he got, the more I seemed to lose him. While school has been great for some things-he has an awesome SLP now who thinks he will "be a talker" I just feel like something is still missing. This seems to make sense and the times that we have tried to join him in his stimming he really gets happy! He will even come and hug me for doing it. This was a hard thing to even get myself to try after being told for so long to just stop him from doing it. But I feel like we need to explore this avenue or I will always wonder if this was the way to get him back. Watching the videos from the site really is making me think this is the right thing to do for him. Thanks again for your input and I am so happy that this is working out for you! Re: OT---Son-Rise Anyone go from ABA based therapy to Son-Rise? we have gone from ABA to SonRise. We are very pleased with this change. However I don't regret using ABA. We had a home program and I felt this vital to establish intensive dietary changes for my son at that time. I had a newborn baby in a sling and a child lost in his own world. I don't know how I could have implemented Sonrise and addressed diet. I'm sure it can be done, but I'm pleased with the path we've chosen. I believe our ABA program was a very good match for our son at one point in his recovery. However I just knew we needed to stop. It was obvious that we weren't able to get to his true missed milestones of social using ABA. We tried changing providers even. For us I realized that our son was in some ways "more" autistic because of ABA. He was hording his favorites and stimming all the time. He was coping in the mainstream, but not really thriving. When we finally just joined him as SonRise advocates, he looked at us with delight and we finally had our son back. The connection was made. He is so eager to play with us. He is becoming so confident and social. I don't believe you can truly teach one to be social. I believe it has to come from within a person. I think the child has to desire this. SonRise creates a social situation where for the first time since diagnosis maybe somebody likes to do what I like to do rather than making me stop. You join the child where they are. They show you the way in , so that you can show them the way out. Maybe most helpful for our family was the emotional healing I did while at the Option Institute for SonRise start-up. I am much more able to navigate my son's recovery because I am well, confident, and at peace. I believe my fear was blocking my son. He could feel it. He is so happy and connected now that I'm ok.I'm grateful for all the behavioral strategies I learned using an ABA home program. This still comes in handy. Because of ABA I'm good at breaking things into steps. I do know kids who get well and ABA works really well. I think once the child can process better and start to learn naturally, they are desiring this social connection. So ABA just helps them to make sense of things. For my son though, he really needs this slowed down, and exaggerated approach in a distraction free environment. We as a family need joy and fun. I feel like we all have a personality now. I feel like I can now use my natural instincts to just be a Mom. What a gift. I'm sure every family finds different ways. I know some who use RDI successfully. I highly reccomend SonRise. > > > > I am looking into Son-Rise and what their program is like. Guest guest
We looked into it. We decided on floortime at the higher levels. They are both somewhat similar. But I just had to read Stanley Greenspans books and started myself.. Joining the child and letting the child lead the way. HUGE. I would say if you are strapped for the money read " Engaging Autism " by Greenspan. It does require effort though : ) Also RDI helps with getting the child to " follow you" Its good to mix it up a bit or the child gets stuck in one or the other. Thats why we did floortime ( ourselves ) and ABA ( state provided ) together. Now mixing in RDI. Its worth reading into or the books of all the different ones, so you can see what your childs need are and can be flexible when those eeds change. Floortime helps most with language at a non verbal and begining level alot. It explains how non verbal communication must come before good spoken language.. This was very true with our son. He is apraxic also and thats a whole different story. Hard to understand his articulation. But he does use words appropriately and loves to 38 and Mom to threeTasha 23..new Mommy ( means I am a Grammy )Casey-Mae 13..sweet as pieElijah 2..
