The two sexes feel pain differently because of their body composition, hormones and central nervous systems, the researchers claim. Drugs such as paracetamol (better known by other names in North America, including Tylenol) are less effective for women and they are more likely to have side-effects, it is said. An international conference in Glasgow last week was told that a better understanding among doctors could save lives, save millions of dollars and avoid thousands of sick days. Yet most do not know of research into how a woman's genetic makeup, biology and hormones affect the way she feels pain. This ignorance means women's complaints can be dismissed or disbelieved and they are often diagnosed with psychiatric conditions such as depression instead, experts claim.
