Guest guest
Hello Kristy , We are a family of five. Our three boys are 2, 6 and 8y. We live in Sandefjord in the south-east of Norway. Our Son Kristoffer (6) is the one with Mosaic DS and Autism. He had " only " Downs until last year when he, after a long process, was diagnosed with Autism... Since then we have used every minute of the day to get into Autism and Gluten-, Casein- and Soy-free diet and biomedical treatment of Autistic children, with great sucsess. We also just last month got the Mosaic diagnose. For the last four years we have suspected Mosaic since he dosen't look like a typical Downs Syndrome kid and have no typical visible signs. Beside the short standard info about Mosaic provided by our lokal Downs Syndrom network, your website and forum is our first " contact " with the Mosaic world... We are just starting to read some of the old treads on your forum now. Best regards Lars-Øystein > > Hi Everyone, > We have a new family from Norway. Guest guest
Lars - We did Gluten and Casein free for a year with our son and it was horrible. I hope to never, ever be on that diet again - but you never know when an allergy will develop - will be tested again for Celiac's disease in August and I am praying that they will find nothing. Guest guest
Lars, I am glad that you have found our group and I hope that we can help in every way that we can to give you information on MDS. Have you looked at our organization's web site? www.imdsa.com We have information pages there also on mosaic Down syndrome. and, if you are interested in becoming a member of IMDSA you can receive our quarterly newsletter MOSAIC WORLD that is full of information on mosaic Down syndrome. If you do want to become a member you can do so on our site as well. How did you find out that Kristoffer had MDS? Did they do a blood test that they hadn't done before? Or, did they just clinically diagnose him because of his lack of characteristics? Please feel free to ask any questions you have on MDS. We all will be happy to share experiences and answer your questions for you. Kristy Lars-Ø wrote: Hello Kristy , We are a family of five. Our three boys are 2, 6 and 8y. Guest guest
Hi Darlene, Do you have Autsim? Our first week after removing milkproducts (casein) was hell for us. He went balistic with airplanefuel... just like someone who don't get his " fix " of heroin... He was up on the walls and up in the roof... almost... but after that week everything has changed, and after removing Gluten (bread ect.) he has imporved speech, from no words to about 10 words. Sleeps at night. He now has eye contact. He seeks contact with others. He understand what we tell him and responds to it. He understands more of the danger aspect. He also developed humor. He is very lucky and have en computer both at home and at school with touchscreen and he does some computergames and programs in his daily training. The last months he also learned have to make choices if he wants an pear or an papaya, or between different computergames. In the start of the GFCFSF-diet we had many mistakes of giving him food that contained both gluten and casein, but now we have a 100 % natural gluten free diet and no casein in any food, drinks or medicine. Our Son, Kristoffer, have no Celiac but we have done a Peptidanalysis of his urin and it came back with the " positive " result and we startede the diett. Guest guest
Lars - has a diagnosis (from the school) of Aspergers which is on the Autism Spectrum. Some people swear by the GF-CF diet but we found no difference with on it and since we can't put our son on the diet without having to go on it ourselves everyone went GF-CF. We stayed on it for a little over a year - but lost so much weight on this diet and he was skinny to begin with, on GF-CF he became more particular about what he eats. I am hoping when he becomes a teenager his appetite will kick in - I have heard of teenagers eating their parents out of house and home :-) (who has MDS) loves working on the computer (so much so that I have to limit her computer time - like TV time). She now has a device, SpringBoard from the Prentke Romich Company, to help her with communication - it is like a mini-laptop that speaks for her. She does give one word utterances (two for Thank you) but the device helps her communicate with teachers better. Over time they learn to communicate with - her Kindergarten teacher know understands about 75% of the time but the device helps them (especially when there are 20 kids in the class and they need an answer fast). As for Celiac, there are two markers that they look for (I don't remember what they are) in the blood and last year one came up high - they did the endoscopy and found one area that looked suspect. This year that marker came up normal but the other came up high so we will do another endoscopy in August. Darlene - Mom to (9) and (7) > > Hi Darlene, > > Do you have Autsim? Guest guest
Hello Darlene, I dont know where you live, but here in Norway we have the glutenfree food and the natural-glutenfree food... in the gluten free food there can be up to 0,3% gluten (often there is more) but in the natural gluten free there are absolute 0% of gluten. That difference took a time for us to notice since there are nobody to tell us (except for internet forums). The difference are very important. We are fortunate to have Karl Ludvig Richelt here in Norway to. (the man with the peptid analysis Ref; Jaquelyn McCandless's book " Children with starving brains " ). We are lucky that the whole family does not have to do the diet. Our son also lost some weight in the beginning, but after that we startet to " heal the gut " with Probiotics and added more vitamines, minerals, Omega-3's, calsium and " smart food " with lots of antioxidants and vimines (avocado, garlic, broccoli, papaya ect.). He gained weiht again. We also reduced and almost removed all the sugar, not to feed the Candida. Lars-Øystein Norway > > > > > > > > > > Hi Everyone, > > > > > We have a new family from Norway. Guest guest
Lars - I had never heard that gluten free food was allowed to have 0.3% of gluten! That is good to know especially due to 's test. We ate mostly plain foods - plain chicken, plain veggies, plain fruit - that is why that diet was so hard on me - it was BORING! does not understand why she can't do everything and eat everything that anyone else in the family has. This is an issue at church since she is the youngest and I have to tell her that she can not have communion until she goes through 3 years of CCD. If we do something she wants to do it too, eat something she wants it eat it too - so if she is going gluten-free so will we all. Guest guest
I'v been told that the reason for the " glutenfree " and " natural glutenfree " is that people with Celiac in most cases can tolerate 0,3% gluten, and that it is " glutenfree " enough. And people with " Hyperpeptiduri " like many Autistic people have, can't tolerate any gluten so they must have 0% gluten in their foods. In some cases even soy(soya) and corn(mais) are removed because the proteins in soy and corn looks alot like gluten, and can do the same damage. I can't say it is so boring to be on the diet... Our family eat less food with gluten and casein than we used to do... but... now we eat more healthy food, more vegetables, berries, herbs, pure meat and " cleaner " food. Lots of recipies from mexico, thailand, india ect. As you might know, we also must prepare much food from the basic, but more and more of the foodstores take in more and more " Clean food " and gluten and caseinfree food. Guest guest
Lars - Thank you for all the websites we may need them in the summer - the one we used to use a lot of was www.kinnikinnick.com out of Canada - I realize that was 3 years ago and there are a whole lot more on the internet now than there were then. I am just used to being on an Italian-food based diet (lots of pasta, pizza and cheese) therefore if you remove my pasta, bread, and cheeses - I have to re-learn to cook ;-) Never liked any of the Rice Pastas - too mushy. Guest guest
-- Hello Lars! Welcome! I recently joined also and have a 4year old daughter with MDS. She has a big speech delay but no visible signs either. We are working on speech and she is progressing really well. She has some AWESOME teachers now and it is wonderful to see all her hard work start paying off. Because of the speech delay she was exhibiting some autistic like signs but doesn't have. You will find alot of encouragement and ideas and help and support here. Guest guest
Hi Donna, Our son startet between around 18 months to spinn wheels, flapp his hands. He startet to rock back and forth. He then also started to, again and again, bang his head into walls, the side of the bed and anything he could sit next to. He also startet to be fixated on water. Put all of his food in the mouth at once. Making noises like " YYYYYYY YYYYYYY " all day long. And he startet to put everything back into his mouth like he used to do earlyer. He could ramble around in the bed for hours and wake up in the middle of the night and very early in the morning. He had som baby babling but this went away. In kindergarden they trained with him but only with Downs syndrome i mind. He was then testet, at age 5 and a half, and found that he mentally was between 6 and 18 months in the development after this we had some more tested done and the diagnose was Autism. When he started school (fall '05) he was on the GFCF-diet and also started ABA training. Since then he had great sucsess. Starting to want to have eyecontact, babling, gained som words (11 by now), makes choices, helps to dress and undress, want to have contact with other people, can sit still for 30 minuttes to watch TV, sits still while eating dinner and starts to use a fork, takes his vitamines willingly by him self, gotten a sense of humor and many other small things. AND he can look at wather without putting his hands into it or stepp into the puddle or pool. I must say i feel very welcome here. Tanks to you all. I think i have learned more about downs and mosaic the last week than I ever did before. In these treads i have up til now mostly writen about our son and his MDS and Autism, but I'm also reading many of the old treads. What kind of training do your daughter have for the speech delay? We are in the ABA training and the speech training we do consists of mimicing and repeating. Lars-OEystein > > > > Hello Kristy , > > We are a family of five. Our three boys are 2, 6 and 8y.
