I am reluctant to say this, because we have all been indoctrinated re the " dangers " of fat and protein for so many years, but I am coming to the conclusion that the epidemic of obesity and diabetes in the U.S. is caused by the high-carbohydrate diet that has been promoted since the 1970s. I keep reading of diabetics taking all these pills and even insulin, and yet continuing to gain weight and get sicker and suffer painful, debilitating complications, and I don't know how to reach out to them and convince them that the answer lies in our diet. We have heard the fat-phobic message for so many years that we are all brainwashed, I fear. I hope your message brings hope and points the way for your fellow diabetics. Guest guest
Hi Neil. Good work! Naturally its the carbs. But we all need them as the primary source of energy for our bodyfunctions. A balanced, daily food-intake, also in DM, should contain around: carbs 50 - 60%, preferably " packed " to slow down absorption rate, with a low glycaemic index. protein 10 - 15% fat 30 - 35% Oluf

The brain can run on ketones if necessary. We don't " need carbohyddrates as the primary source for our body functions. " And a diet that is 60% carbsand 10% protein could not be called " balanced. " The lopsided diet you recommend would make good blood glucose control problematic for those on insulin/pills, and nearly impossible for those of us managing on diet alone.
