Hi gang,

I joined a gym today for the first time in my life! What an awkward

feeling to have not much of a clue what to do! I used the motorized

treadmill for 20 mins at 3mph and went just over a mile. Uphill too! Then

I rode a snazzy exercise bike for about 20 mins at a moderate pace. My

legs could sure feel it when I was done!

The instructor was helpful and I said I would just play around and try the

different equipment out and see what I like and what I dont like. Tomorrow

she will show me how to use some of the other stuff there.

My motivation for this is that soon there will be snow on the ground

(waahhhh.......) and I wont be going on my marathon walks much more, so I

needed a Plan B. I enjoyed the experience, and there was a lady there that

I know so that made it more pleasant.

This gym has no contract to sign, you can pay for a month ($35.) and go as

often as you like, or pay for a session ($5.) so I paid for a month. I

figure I should see some results in that time, and also see how I feel

about going.

My bg level when I got home was 5.7!

That's great, Elva. My gym has a one month discount, if I join for 3 months

in the winter. Perfect for me, as my outdoor work slows a lot due to

weather. Loving this fall though :-)

Hooray on the glucose reading, Elva! Your gym sounds really reasonable. I

think if more gyms would offer such a flexible plan, more people would sign

up. That's a great idea for the cold winter months.

Debby, your numbers sound great! Are you doing that without medication? 165

grams of carbs in a 1500-calorie diet is more than a lot of us can manage,

but if you keep on registering under100 2-3 hours after a meal, it sure

looks like it is working for you. For one thing, you have your weight down

to within just a few pounds of your goal. That makes your body much more

efficient as uptaking glucose. We envy you, girl!

Those sound like really good readings. But what does your sugar go to

right after you eat, say an hour later. My BS readings are highest at the

one-hour mark. Apparently this is somewhat of an anomaly, as many people

apparently peak at 2 hours. I was challenged on this in another list, so

did a week's worth of checks at both the 2 and the 2 hour times. Mostly

the high was at 1 hour.

Those sound like traditional ADA high carb amounts. If I ate that way, I'd

gain back every pound I've lost, and my aafter meal sugar readings would be

in the high 100's, at least. -- If not over 200.

I think that's a pretty good weight number. It's what I used to weigh

" back when " in my youth

You might also want to check 1-1/2 hours after breakfast some of the time.

Mixing up your testing schedule and keeping a journal of the foods you ate

can be very helpful to you down the road. The more your meal consists of

carbohydrates (and the more those carbohydrates are highly-processed grains

such as breakfast cereal, breads, instant potatoes, etc.), the quicker your

glucose will spike. Only about half the protein you eat impacts your

b.g.'s - and only about half as fast as carbs. And fats actually slow the

whole process down. You will soon find your " comfort level. "

Now if your kept your carb intake at your breakfast level and skipped the

nighttime snack, you would be at just 100 grams anyway ... and with your

weight under 140, your body should be in much better shape to handle carbs

than if you were significantly heavier. And, as Barb mentioned, physical

activity " does a (diabetic) body a world of good. "

Hi ,

I checked it after lunch (1Hr.) and it was 181. So maybe I'm like you,

highest after 1 hr. I didn't get to check it after 2or 2 1/2 hrs because I

had a dr. appointment. I mentioned the 181 to her after 1 hr. and she said

thats ok, and that it will be that high right after I eat.

She told me to take random readings at all different times so I can show them

to her the next time I come in, and then maybe I can just test 3 times a wk.

Thanks, Debby

Debby, good for you - varying your testing schedule to get the full picture.

Now, if you don't mind being a human guinea pig, test after eating some

meals that contain almost no carbohydrates ... and make those carbohydrates

something that has a great track record with diabetics (raw cauliflower and

broccoli dipped in guacamole, or a big salad. Diabetics are often astonished

to see just how much the carbohydrates in our foods impact our readings.

Do you find that you often forget to take the readings? I do. Even when

I set a timer to remind me. It will ding, and if I'm in the middle of

something (like composing a message), I'll go on with that 'til I finish.

Fatal error. Half the time, at least, I forget I was " dinged " and there

goes the readings.

I also am on a random reading schedule. I get two strips a day covered by

Medicare. Currently I'm doing a Fasting reading, and then a post prandial

(after meal) one, either lunch or supper. I should have taken a 1-hour

after reading last night - an off the schedule no-no meal. But I

forgot. (The kids came in here to go on my computer (newer than theirs.)

The food really sort of did me in. I was snacking the rest of the

evening. Hopefully " good " snacks - but nevertheless, the balance was way

off.
