'The place we live in is making us poorly'

A BRIDPORT family who have waited 18 months for something to be done

about damp in their flat say it is making them ill.

Nicola , 22, and Weller, 21, spent nine months sharing

a three-bedroom house with nine adults and a baby after becoming

homeless.

Raglan Housing finally found them a flat in Doctor Close -

and 18 months later they are still waiting for something to be done

about the damp.

Nicola said: " My daughter has had 11 chest infections since we moved

in and been on antibiotics six times. Before, she never had a cough

or a cold.

" My partner has never had so many chest infections and flus and

colds, and I keep getting lung infections. My doctor is adamant it

is because of the damp. He said it is extremely bad and we shouldn't

being living here. "

The bathroom is so damp the shower curtains, toys, bath seats,

towels and mats grow black mould overnight. She said: " We can't even

keep our toothbrushes in there overnight. I am on my fourth shower

curtain, I have had six or seven bath mats go black. "

advertisementThe sealant by the French doors has rotted with the

damp, letting rain and wind in. The damp ruins the curtains and

Nicola has to keep towels at the bottom to keep the draughts out.

She added: " When we moved in all the bathroom used to do was flood,

and they changed the bath.

" The first person who came to change the bath said I had mould

because I was not a clean person.

" I scrub daily with anti-fungal disinfectant. I have even got anti-

fungal paint from Jewsons. My gas bill has gone up by at least £4 a

week with the heat just disappearing through the back doors.

" The water drips through the doors when it's raining. I get to the

point where I just want to cry, it's so bad. These properties aren't

even five years old. "

Phil Sweet, regional director of Raglan, said they had addressed a

condensation issue in the bathroom last year.

" Following a call last month our surveyor inspected the property,

identified another condensation problem and arranged for our service

contractor to fit a dehumidistat fan in the bathroom and treat the

affected walls.

" This work should have been completed on February 20 and we are

investigating why this has not happened.

" We have agreed the work is necessary and our priority now is to

ensure it is completed as soon as possible and to Miss 's

satisfaction. "

Where do you find these posts. This just says it all. Doesn't this just

break everyone's heart?

BTW, I read recently that latex paint often uses chemicals like mercury as

additives.. to fight fungus..

Smart, huh?

I just have them sent to my email. If I posted everything that I

receive I'd be flooding this board, but one of the main reasons for

posting this article it just goes to show people from all over the

world are reacting the same way we are to these toxins. But yet our

physicians and policy makers have a hard time wrapping their head

around it. Yet this is allowed to continue.

Did you mean news group? Yes, some I do and I also receive from others

that I have met on live from around the world. That every now and then

send me articles. When all this started I had a friend set me up my

own chatroom, which at that time I thought I would never even get

involved with those. The title was, " People exposed to toxic mold. " (I

think) This was many years ago and it started off slowly and after

about 6 months speaking to many that were affected and some just

looking for information from all over the globe, it got to be a little

bit too much and I shut it down. I can only imagine the demand for

this now. Even at that time I was up many hours of the night, not

wanting to turn anyone away and working at the same. This would go on

sometimes until 2 or 3 in the morning, like it does sometimes now. The

weekends I would compile a list of emails and information I needed to

send out to individuals.

It took up alot of time. So that is why I had to shut it down. It took

up too much time and in the beginning more of my attention was on many

others and not what was going on here.

I didn't realize how overwhelming the demand would be for information

and other resources. I must say chatrooms of all sorts you do have

your critics or naysayers that tend to find you sooner or later. And

yes like now I often removed them, but for some reason I let stay

because they showed an interest for one reason or another. Part of the

time they acted like mold was no big deal, but in the end they

realized they were sick and/or their family.

This is also where I met one of my first mold victims from Ohio. He

had no idea the dangers these toxins could cause to ones health. He

was a gentlemen in his early sixties who was suffering from several

different types of cancer and was seeking some treatment in Mexico. As

the story goes, now that he realizes he was very healthy until his

house flooded several times and his mother in law that lived in the

basement became very ill and had paid the ultimate price. Buck also

paid the ultimate price. But before he left us he knew it was the mold

that caused to his health to deteriorate. It never seems to end, does

it!

A long explanation I know, but this is how I got started helping

others, right from the beginning. It never gets any easier. Let's hope

soon it does.

, Yes, I meant news groups. Thanks. one of the mold doctors many

of us see said one of the first lawsuits over mold came out of Ohio

River valley area/cincinnati from an allergist here that was

diagnosing people with toxic mold symptoms. He said that big money

interests got to him and he changed his story and now says that mold

only causes allergies. I know who that Allergist is and he still has

a clinic here. Too bad he changed his tune. I wouldn't have to go

out of town for help. Some people cave in to pressure while other

stand their ground, and we all know (and appreciate) who those people

are.

I have gotten the same kinds of feelings from doctors. Its like dentists and

dental amalgams they have some kind of gag order or something.

Clearly the word is out on something... It would be interesting of he would

be willing to talk about what kind of pressure he feels to toe the line..

what did they do to 'convince' him?

I don't know but apparently people were coming to Cincinnati from out

of town to see him at time. Then some lawsuits resulted and doctor

was 'given a hard time', then he stopped diagnosing it and started to

say mold only causes allergies. A mold doctor we all know told me

about this. He said one of the first lawsuits came out of Cincinnati,

as the Ohio River Valley is very moldy area, but this is what

happened, so probably many people sick here from mold but don't know

it--and elsewhere of course.

A lawsuit or putting medical certification at risk are two common

threats.

The great economist Galbraith wrote an incredibly good

essay on the kind of " safe " mindset that ends up being a huge

impediment to scientific progress and resists change -which he called

" the conventional wisdom " - in his 1958 book " The Affluent Society "

Barb,

You are correct as far as these doctors being pressured, threatened

or whatever it takes to redirect their practice. Doctors that want

to go into this field are " strongly " pressured to go into a

different field of medicine. A couple of years ago I was getting

disturbing reports from one of the leading physicians that have been

in the forefront from day one,of not diagnosing this illness fully

and just saying, " it could be mold. " This was very upsetting, so I

made some phone calls and the response I got was, they were left no

choice. So they were only partially diagnosing, nothing absolute. If

they did their funding would be pulled and they would not be allowed

to continue. " I can still treat, if they pull my funding I can't

help anybody. " So they were given the choice and I understood and

accepted it.
