SOLITARY CHEMORECEPTOR CELLS IN THE NASAL CAVITY SERVE AS SENTINELS

OF RESPIRATION-NEUROSCIENCE-2003

<http://www.pnas.org/cgi/content/full/100/15/8981>

Inhalation of irratating substances leads to activation of the

trigeminal nerve, triggering protective reflexes that include apnea

or sneezing.

We report here that, in addition to free nerve endings, an extensive

population of trigeminal chemosensory cells exist within the nasal

respiratory epithelium, providing an avenue whereby inhaled toxic

dusts or aerosols can trigger respiratory reflexes.
