Guest guest
Hi, All: About hearing losses and progression as it pertains to , we just had her annual hearing test conducted for her case conference (annual case review) IEP meeting. Her results have been getting worse - or maybe her responses are getting worse? When she was an infant, ABR showed a severe to profound loss (60-90db loss bilaterally). She has tested in the 90-100db range over the last year. Now both ears are showing no responses at about 110db. (A snowmobile is 85-120db, and a jackhammer is about 113db!) She did respond to the vibrotactile (bone osscilator) testing better - actually, much better - 65db. I need to ask the audiologist about what options we have for getting better " hearing " for . Should we try a bone conduction aid? Or just let things go as they are since she uses ASL so well? She has no responses in the vocal/speech frequency ranges for any testing. Anyone have any ideas of what to ask or where to start? Friends in CHARGE, Marilyn Ogan Mom of Ken (9) and (6 - CHARGE), Wife of Rick Indianapolis, IN oganm@... Guest guest
lin: My audiologist told me several years ago that a bone conduction hearing aid is indicated in children who test better with bone oscillator than they do with ABR. She told me what this meand is that there is some hearing ion the inner ear and middle ear damage--the oscillator apparently bypasses the middle ear. The drawback of the bone conduction aids is that they come in a headband. There was a child in Barney several years ago with one--don't know if anyone remembers. Hope this helps. Ana: I know that the Audiologist has tried in the past 3 years has been at the Deaf School to do the bone conduction testing, but usually got poor results. The other testing has been pure tone thresholds. (I think that is the correct terminology.) I'm not sure why responded so well this time with the bone conduction testing. Maybe she is getting more accurate with her responses in the pure tone testing (which is lousy), but has decided this " vibration thingy " is kinda fun. >She told me what this meand is that there is some hearing ion the >inner ear and middle ear damage--the oscillator apparently bypasses the >middle ear. I'm not sure we've ever had a good imaging done of 's middle or inner ear structures. I've never seen any kind of reports, and believe me, I have all the really important stuff copied - and THAT would be important. >There was a child in Barney several years ago with one--don't know >if anyone remembers I sure do remember the boy. My Mom has a Braney video for that was made when that child was doing things with Barney. Thanks for the information about the aids/testing.
