Guest guest
I don't turn my furnace off but I just use heaters as extra heat in rooms that I <<sit>> alot in, because when you sit around you get colder. Those rooms I like to be toasty. In rooms you are more active in, like perhaps kitchen or laundry room, your activity allows you to tolerate lower temperatures. I don't think pipes freeze unless it get very, very cold. You can also insulate those pipes easily yourself. If they already are insulated, you can improve insulation on them if you are in doubt. I don't know much about keeping crawl spaces dry so no help there. I do know that some people use the area heaters for sole heat and I did at hotel I stayed at for example. For that type of usage, perhaps you get just get a dehumidifier for crawlspace??? > > I am very interested in the heater concept. To me there a few benefits that would relax my mind tremendously for my daughters health.
Guest guest
the water in pipes freezes at 32 degrees just like any other water and when it freezes it expands around 9% with tremendous force and that force can pop them open causing a huge disaster... Guest guest
Got to walmart and buy an indoor/outdoor thermometer (wireless) and install the remote sensor in the same area as your pipes are. That way you will always know weather your in danger of pipes freezing. Have a backup plan if the crawl space drops down to 32 or less. Maybe some type of portable heater that won't cause any type of fire hazard for emergency's. Although if you got one of those fuel oil heaters the efficiency and brute power would allow you to turn it way up high and doing this would probably heat the floors enough to keep the pipes from freezing.
